Title: chillis
Post by: SueSteve on July 15, 2007, 16:57:06
Hi,
I have cayenne chillis, they are long and green. The first one appeared in the middle of May and is still green.
I have been waiting for them to turn red, but they don't appear to want to.
Do they go red once picked, ripening off the plant? Or am I too impatient, or does the weather have something to do with it?
Sue

In a word ..Yes!! They can take a while to ripen if conditions are not just right.

We could do with a bit of sunshine!!

Incidentally have you fed them, a high potash feed would help eg tomato food

You need to leave them on the plant really.

With the feed thats just been suggested for you and some more sun,you will soon see the fruits of your labour turning fiery red  ;D

Just follow the instructions on the bottle as per feeding tomatoes and you should be fine

Sue - if you take them off, they just shrivel in due course.

Sue-are they Joes long Cayenne? If so they take a while to ripen. Green they are rubbish but when they do eventually ripen they are good. Hot(ish) and a decent flavour.

If you want them red, leave them, but you can also eat the green ones chopped up in different dishes. If you do not like the green ones too hot, then remove the seeds, but do not then rub your eyes, until you have washed your hands about 5 times!
