I have just taken my first chili off my plant that I was given by Jeannine (thank you) and I was wondering about how to go about saving seeds. Can I just save the seeds from one of the hot peppers I pick or do I need to leave them on the plant or dry them in a certain way.
For infomation to Jeannine their will be no way I will eat any of them. I tried a slice about 1/2 inch and I am still on fire 15 minutes later but I know lots of people who like them that hot.

I dried a chilli - left on the plant til the very end then put on kitchen window sill and ignored until I needed the seeds - opened up and potted. Really easy germination and plants now in bloom.
Probably beginners luck ::) ::)
If you only have one plant they should come true but chillies can be easily crossed and bred out...

Didn't know that - but then had 3 Cayenne's, so no chance of crossing anyway.

What does that mean? I'm new at this!
I let the chilli shrivel and dry, then carefully took the seeds out,kept them in a paper bag. I planted 12 seeds from 2 different chilli`s and all came up and are in flower and small fruit. Gave most of them away as theres only 2 of us.
Hi Suzi... if you want to save your own seeds it can be quite complicated...
If they were F1 Hybrids to start with you won't get the same plants most of the time as they revert to their parents...
If they aren't F1 Hybrids then some plants come true... peas and french beans and toms are easiest... some breed out and have to be grown in isolation from other varieites of the same species... and then some have to have a large number of plants to stop them losing vigour (inbreeding)...
or you could just wait for Wyevale's famous 25p a packet sale!

Or get a chilli from another allotmenteer or a jar in your cupboard. Chillis are usually hot, and unless you are a connoisseur it probably does not matter if they are mongrels, they still bite!

So where do I stands as I have 2 hot peppers and 4 sweet peepers in two grow bags in a small plastic green house. What happens if I save the seeds? Will I get sweet hot peppers or hot sweet ones? Or is it not that simplistic?

You'd have to grow them out and see Gary... you may get something good, wonderful or indifferent... but probably not be sure what was what until you ate it!
