Title: Those who bought Homebase Fruit trees....
Post by: Kea on July 10, 2007, 16:48:12
I know some people bought some homebase fruit tree's this year i wondered how everyone got on with theirs?
My Damson didn't do anything and is still sitting their leafless. I'm now debating whether to buy another from somewhere else or not. It really didn't have enough roots on it, so much for cheap trees!

Kea, I bought three in the spring and they are doing really well, have lots of leaves and have each put on new growth and the Victoria plum flowered.  I think you should be due your money back if there are no leaves. :(

I'm Tulippa - I have a Homebase Plum and Cherry and both are doing really well, putting on growth.

Take yours back and assert your statutory rights ;D

Kea, take it back and get your money back, with or without a receipt as it's not "fit for purpose". On the spur of the moment I bought an apricot from Homebase, it too had not a very good root system and has not taken. Coincidentally, I was chatting to a customer and she too had bought one and it too had died. So it isn't you, for certain, it's the rotten stock they had in!
Mine's going back to them this week.
In future I will stick to the places that I've had good trees from, including Buckingham, Keepers and Marshalls.

I've always been very shy of cheap fruit trees and bushes from supermarkets and DIY stores, although spending more doesn't guarantee success either.  :(

But at the beginning of this year, on a whim, I bought two plum trees from Morrisons.  They were very cheap, and it was at the very end of the planting season, so it was an inexpensive bet, really.

To my delight they've both flourished, and one looks as though we'll even get a few plums!

So I guess that if you don't mind the rather limited range of varieties, it's worth a punt.

Another first-time buyer of Homebase's fruit trees -- an impulse buy of a morello cherry, which is still doing well despite the weather's attempts to wash it into the neighbour's garden!
Like Melbourne, I bought mine at the end of the planting season, but was impressed at how fast it settled in. At the checkout when I paid for mine, the lass there reminded me to keep my receipt in case the tree did die although she did say returns were quite rare. Take yours back!

Thanks everybody! I'm pretty sure i still have the receipt but I still have the tag off the tree saying Homebase on it.

I'm glad yours grew Triffid as i think it was my post that sent you to Homebase to look at the trees in the first place.

When I took mine out of the pot to plant it there were hardly any roots on it so I wasn't that confident about it at that point. It still had living tissue a couple of months later but hasn't produced any leaves and now looks dead.
