Title: Asparagus and Fennel creamy pasta
Post by: aquilegia on June 10, 2004, 12:50:54
This is what I threw together for dinner last night (asparagus 50p for two bunches from the farm shop  :o)

two bunches of asparagus
half bulb fennel
1/2oz butter
1/2oz flour
3/4pint milk
nutmeg
fresh chopped parsley
grated parmesan

1. cut ends off asparagus and chop rest into 1in lengths. Boil for about 6-8 mins until softened, but not soggy. Rinse in cold water.

2. shred fennel into lengths about half a cm wide.

3. melt butter. add flour and stir well. cook for one min. Take off heat and gradually add milk, stirring all the time. Return to heat and continue stirring.

4. Add freshly grated nutmeg, fennel and asparagus to white sauce. Keep stirring.

5. Cook pasta.

6. when the two are cooked, mix together with cheese and parsley and then eat with garlic bread and salad.

yummy.

Sounds good -they had some bulb fennel in the market....

I do a fennel and smoked haddock risotto, I could try and come up with a recipe, but the title pretty much says it all.

GardenerJ, Asparagus requires a long-term committment. 3 years from seed to first (small) cropping I believe. You can plant 1 year old crowns and get them to crop in 2 years.
But picking and eating on the same day is delicious, you'll never go back to icky (expensive >:() supermarket stuff. (Note - never grown my own this experience is from cheating and going to a pick your own farm  :) )

I'm not sure if you can pick asparagus at this time of year though, we drive past the asparagus fields on the way to the strawberry fields, and the asparagus has all grown out to fern now. Usual season is end of May and for about 6 weeks only.  :-\

GardenerJ - if you've an allotment plot, MAKE SPACE!  Yes, it's a coupla years from planting crowns to getting a crop ------ but, the wait is worth it!  :) :) :) :) :)

First patch planned on my new allotment?  For a new set of asparagus plants!

Just a thought!  All best - Gavin
