Have just taken over and cleared a plot and am itching to get growing. Can anyone recommend what to plant this time of the year?
I've just sown some more French beans, courgettes and beetroot. You could also try lettuce, carrots, spring onions and chard.
Hi joe :)
we got our plot on the 1st july last year we planted :-
potatoes (got a good crop) mainly to clear the ground a bit
cabbage
beetroot
turnips
cauliflower
pumpkins
sprouts
and dwarf french beans
good look with your plot
debs ;D
Hello and welcome.
Where are you? I'm in the middle of planting out leeks; sprouts & PSB ready to go in; just sown more climbing beans; got carrots to sow; lettuce & stuff an on-going thing. Still worth planting out any of the tender stuff (courgettes, squashes, tomatoes, peppers) if you can get the plants.
Try it and see. If it doesn't work, so what? If it does, yippee! Your own produce!
Meanwhile, start getting beds ready for October: onions, garlic, broad beans.
Have fun!
Welcome to the madhouse Joe, good advice for you to plant as above. ;D ;D ;D
Rice...sorry Joe , we are flooded. Welcome to the crazy gang XX Jeannine
All good advice for you there Joe - oh, by the way, welcome ;D
Our plot's been devastated by the weather, so we'll be starting again, right there with ya ::) ;)
Good luck and do take some piccies to show us later in the year - good luck!
Joe, if you're not in too northerly or highland a place, you also still have time to get a crop of spuds!
Dobies (and probably other mail-order companies) do cold-stored seed spuds designed to be planted in summer for a late autumn/ early winter harvest.
when we dug up our first earlies, we threw some in bags of muck, they're all up and growing, so, maybe spuds for christmas ;D
Chinese veg, leaf salad..........
beetroot, carrots, autumn cauliflowers, endive, kale, kohl rabi, spring onions, pak choi, radish, spinach, spinach beet, Swiss Chard, turnips
I can't believe how many of you replied to my query, thank you very much for all your advice. Thought it was late in the season but now realise that there's loads of stuff to get in the ground. I'm in Essex so are quite lucky with the weather. As you said what's to loose. Is it still OK to put seeds in the ground then or are you all talking about small plants. (apologies for my ignorance)
Thanks to you all....Joe
sowing seed in my case. If you have small plants you can add broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks and calabrese
Any flowers? in september remember hardy annuals!
Joe, you have enough advice above. Should keep you busy through to winter.
Good luck!
Jack
