Title: Talking of raw veg!
Post by: Hot_Potato on July 01, 2007, 14:26:45
as someone was on another thread  (Kohl Rabi) ...has anyone 'discovered' any other raw veggies that have surprised them....I was recently chunking up sweet potato to add to a mix for 'roasted veg' and chomped on a piece........absolutely lovely, crisp, juicy & sweet  with a lovely flavour.....would be lovely grated I should think - make a change from carrot.

I like most veggies as much raw as they are cooked.  Not spuds tho  :-X.  Especially when young.  Love young brassica leaves in my salads and a freshly pulled onion I could almost eat like an apple, except the old man wouldn't come near me!!  ;D  Turnips are lovely grated raw in a coleslaw like salad, never tried swede though.

Hot_Potato, 'twas I, I fear. The only surprise that doesn't seem to have been covered is broccoli stalks. I don't grow it myself, but if you grow the sort that ends up with thick stalks, try peeling them and eating the middles. Another I've just this minute thought of is that bit of cauliflower that's left when all the florets have gone.  I'm in 100% agreement with Emma Jane and I think our paths have met here before. A salad for me is just the biggest variety of raw stuff I can fit on a plate. Not keen on raw spuds myself either, but my niece can chomp them like there's no tomorrow (and raw dried pasta, just as an aside). The up side of eating raw onions and garlic: you get a clear run to the bar. ;D

Geoff.

Swede is lovely, especially when it has had the frost on it!
Also the 'heart' of the cauliflower.
Oh and a new one to me, courgettes, a nice nutty flavour.

good to get some of your 'experiments' - some I've tried to and like i.e.

love raw swede - yummy grated (with or without the salad)
I love the 'stalk' bit of cauliflower & white cabbage (kept in a bowl in the fridge - white cabbage on it's own chopped small & picked at regularly, proves an excellent 'high fibre food' ;)
I thinly slice courgette & add to a salad sometimes - love the flavour (can't eat cucumber cos of pain it gives me altho I love it).....
agree with Tim re fennel & beetroot (both delish)
and of course, tiny spinach leaves are lovely added to a salad also

still puzzling over Saddad's suggestion (2nd posting) never heard of it - think he's kidding me - when I google it....got some weird General or something ::)

I've never had Kohl Rabi (must sometime) and think there are lots more I've not tried.

Actually before my Feltnam first peas were ready, i was down the plot working and got hungry... I ate the pods - which were flat and they were delicious and crisp and sweet.

Beauregard is a variety of sweet potato.. Hot_Potato...
Beans are great but you are advised not to eat them raw...

thanks Saddad for explanation - was a bit puzzled! (& ignorant too)

so it wasn't Pierre Gustav! :)

btw - do have the occasional nibble of raw runner beans (when preparing them) but not enough to cause any probs!

Raw is better than cooked for many things, I have had a lovely crop of peas this year and NONE have made it into the house :-)  courgette makes lovely crudite's with a dip.  Cauliflower and broccoli are great raw (my poor old grandad used to regret letting me near his lotty when I was a small child - there were bites taken out of everything!!)  I even like carrots raw but I am not keen on them cooked.  I quite like the look of the "gorilla diet" they did on the telly where you only eat raw fruit and veg.

I didn't like beetroot, until I tried beetroot wine. Now I like beetroot, raw, in borscht and fermented.
