Title: What is wrong with my potatoes?
Post by: allaboutliverpool on June 30, 2007, 19:57:31
All this wet weather seems to have wreaked havoc with my potatoes. The haulms look great and I have been eating the tubers since the 5th June but now some are splitting.
When I took them home and cut into an unsplit one it was so taut that it split the instant I cut the skin.
If farmers have the same problem, it is going to mean a hike in potato prices, on top of the increase in cost of other vegetables due to dry spring/wet June.
I am glad I have an allotment.

Heavy rains or too much irrigation during the final 3 to 4 weeks before harvest may cause the roots to split, especially if conditions have been dry for a period before late water application begins.
