Hi I am hooked on the potatoes now but running out fast- I want to plnt some first earlies to be ready for xmas- I have found them online at dobies and T & M but wondered if there was anywhere a little less expensive- they are coming up at 13 pounds including delivery!
Hello
Try http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/
Excellent
Jack
I have had catalogues from Marshalls and Dobies I think, and they both had spuds.
would also recomend http://www.alanromans.com/Default.asp?cookiecheck=yes&
but i dont think they have christmas veg on there yet...
They are really expensive, and seem only available in large quantities (ie 20 or so). How about finding some existing first or second earlies with several eyes on them, and set them aside for chitting and planting? Actually, I have a feeling that second croppers don't need chitting; someone will put me right if that's not true!
I will be setting some aside for Xmas spuds. :P ;D ;D ;D
right i shall try that then- i have just unearthed my last little crop tonight i will check them in the morning to see if there are any worth using!
Xmas spuds - do they need to be grown under cover or can they be planted outside? I've never tried it before but would love to if I can use my first earlies... :)
shoved some of our small ones in the pop up bags from tescos..they're up already..don't know what we'll get from them but the bags are hanging around empty, apart from one I've planted new french beans in ;D
We planted them in the open, forgot to keep an eye on them, the haulms all got eaten by slugs, who were ravenous in the autumn, and they should have been fleeced in cold weather. So better under cover, if you can. :)
Thanks asbean. ;) Will try planting some in the autumn. :)
As above Tora I will plant deep then cover when it gets cold. ;D ;D ;D
What about using some regular supermarket spuds that have chitted because they've been left too long?
I've got 2 bags that have sprouted and I'm going to try to get these in this weekend (weather pending).
i didn't think that worked suzi??
I tried it about 10 years ago in a small veggie plot in my garden and it worked fine. I got as many tubers from them as I have with other spuds in my lottie and don't remember losing any of them.
:D
well I just might give it a go then! conduct a little potato experiment in my back garden- I've nothing to lose as there are only so many butternut squash/ acorn squash/ spinach pots I can do!
