Title: Strelitzia sowing advice
Post by: MrsKP on June 28, 2007, 08:17:34
The M-I-L brought me some seeds back from hollibobs.  Packet says I can sow now but the seeds seem rather hard.

Should I be doing anything special with them (like soaking) before I sow ??

thanking you muchly.

I have recently sown 2 sorts of strelitzia.
One had to be sown in moist sand and then placed in the dark, so far 1 has germinated, that took 2 months. The others still haven't germinated yet and its been now  3 and a half months.
The other seeds are black bird of paradise seeds. they have to be sown with the tuff on in moist compost in a propagator.

Which type do you have?
please let us know how long it takes for your seeds to germinate.
Good luck!

Strelitizia Reginae.  Seeds brought from Spain, Doesn't give much advice apart from sow 3 or 4cm deep and 3 or 4 years to flowering.  No germination times given.  3 to 4 months seems to fit in quite well lol.

3 out of the 4 have sunk, one has floated.

Will sow them and forget about them for a while.

Don't give up on them - they can take months to germinate.

The advice i got was to sandpaper the coat to thin it a bit and to soak in hydrogen peroxide for 24 hrs. When i used this mine all germinated. they do need a bit of warmth to.

good luck

Thanks for the advice peeps.  Lacking in hydrogen peroxide, they were soaked in water for 48 hours (couldn't get round to sowing them yesterday).

Will stick them in the leccy propogator when the OH gets up !

Watch this space (not too closely cos you'll be here forever).

Mrs, I chucked mine in reagular multi purpose compo, watered and left them on the side in the conservatory.  100% germination.  I have 4 different varieties now and I have them all in my huge planter so am hoping they will all flower at similar times to give me a real show!  Loads of new leaves already this year so should have plenty of flowers for Christmas again.  ;D
