Hi Guys,
I know there are a number of topics on garlic already but its not answering all my questions so here we go again.
I have 3 areas of garlic i have just pulled one as they looked ready, the other 2 still have green growth but i think they have rust as the leaves are yellowing and are starting to die back.

I have found that a couple of the bulbs appear to have formed additional cloves outside the bulb, i guess that they would either grow a second plant be encompased into the bulb??? I DONT KNOW HELP!!

I have pulled them off keeping the root intact and replanted :) Have i done the right thing???
I plan on drying the garlic i have pulled (as per previous thread) although i am going to roast one fresh tonight for dinner :-)

Spooky! Never seen such an addition. I would not replant - just eat it!!
And although you have lifted, it's just possible that they might have bulked up a bit more?
Thanks Tim.
Re bluking up - i was not sure which is why i pulled this small bed as its only 8 plants the others are all double figures.
Re Smaller bulbs - will pull them out next time i am up.
Thanks

That double barreled bulb may have been caused by you planting a double clove i.e. the clove was actually split in the same shell and you would be unable to see this at planting time, then as a consequence they both developed to give you this.
I have on the odd occasion found this with onion setts
Incidentally did both bulbs break into separate cloves?
Your garlic is looking good cambourne - much bigger than mine - when did you say you planted yours? I planted mine in Oct/Nov and have now also got rust.
Jitterbug
Tee-Gee - wow i did not know that, one clove formed a bulb the other seamed to form beside it. I noticed after i had pulled them but they had also formed Garlic Scapes. (http://www.moscowfood.coop/archive/scape.html)
Jitterbug - these cloved we planted in Oct/Nov as well, my other garlic was planted later in the year and in Febuary so there not quite ready. The rush on the other plants are just at the top and there is lots of green still on the stem so i can hold off for a while. The problem is that i have planted one bed 2 close together which i think will cause me some problems. I am considering some selective picking to allow the others to grow more.
I think i watered the garlic maybe 3 or 4 times since they were planted as i was aware that i over watered last year, and i think that the fact i have not watered so much is why the rust is only on some of the outer leaves.
I found the following " Rust infection is promoted by low light and high moisture levels so avoid shade and maintain close attention to watering. Infected plants should be treated immediately either by removal & burning or by spraying with an appropriate fungicide. "
Once i harvest the rest of the garlic i plan to replace the soil where I can.
Pride before a fall? Just seen that 1/2 mine have rust - like our local allotment - so they've had to come out before time up. They had looked SO good. Only read that bit about rust today - wonder if I overwatered.
And more white rot in the same bed. Wonder if we'll get a leek this year??
And quite a bit of this.............
