My radish, rocket and land cress all look a bit sad at the mo, not putting on any growth and a pinkish hue to the seed leaves.
I've tried feeding but nothing seems to help. They are all in various mixes of shop-bought and homemade composts.
I'm gutted, usually these all do really well for me. :(
I'm guessing it's some sort of deficiency ... any ideas?
From the photos (particularly the top one) the chlorosis appears to have started in the seed leaves and the older bottom leaves, and be working up the plants. This - particularly combined with the `autumn` colouring of some of the older leaves - usually suggests magnesium deficiency. The problem is that if the compost is a mixture of shop bought and home made composts it seems unlikely that they would all suffer from the same deficiency unless you`ve incorporated a lot of potassium in some form or another - this could undoubtedly cause a magnesium deficiency. Did you by any chance include compost previously used for growing tomatoes?
I could be barking up entirely the wrong tree, but a spray with Epsom Salts would be worth a try, and shouldn`t cause much harm if I`m wrong.
BUT I don`t like the look of that compost (top picture) one little bit - it looks far too rough and open to support the density of plants you have in it., and it could be that starvation is playing a part in the problem.
Cheers Kepouros, I'll try the Epsom salts. What dilution do you use? Also, you say spray - directly onto the leaves?
Re. the compost in the first picture, it's the New Horizon peat-free stuff. It is very rough, looks more like bark chip than compost, I've used it as a top layer only for this very reason.
I don't often re-use compost in pots, I tend to spread it on beds a mulch, so no old tomato compst in there either.
Thanks for your help. :)
I have a feeling they are too wet! plus you should not need to feed them as these are fast growing crops and there should be enough nutrients in the compost to keep them going.
Incidentally what have you fed them with?
Thanks Tee Gee. This malaise started before the monsoons.
I fed them out of desperation, trying to get them going again: seaweed feed, diluted as per instructions.
Normally I just chuck these crops in a pot, water when they're dry and leave them to it - something's gone wrong this year, I just don't know what. :(
I really begrudge buying rocket and radish when I can usually grow them so easily. >:(
