I have a Morello cherry tree, which has produced fruit for the first time this year.
My question is when are they ready?
I'm a little confused as in a fruit growing book I have, they are supposed to be ready August/September. It is now only mid June, but many have turned red.
Are they now ready or do they plump up over the next month or so?
Difficult to tell by taste as they are an acid cherry.
Thanks
Steve
A morello will never be sweet but the flavour does improve as they ripen-to answer your question though-unless you protect them the birds will decide they are ripe three days before you intended to pick them
We have morellos at school and they do get sweet - they are normally ready end of july... try one and see you will soon know!
Some of the cherries on my Morello are ready now. Will be picking some this weekend to add to the summer pudding for Sunday !
My morello cherries are becoming red as well. I think it's a lot earlier than usual this year.
I pick them only when they have turned dark red. Like cleo says they won't be sweet but the flavour will be much better.
I've never had birds picking my morello cherries so far. Maybe I was just lucky but generally they prefer sweet cherries... :)
