Title: Hows Your Plums?
Post by: tuinman on June 22, 2007, 07:44:35
The Plum tree's are just hanging this year again, they usually have a bad year or two so i'm pretty chuffed.

I have two, one is very prolific and keeps fruiting, but the other is shrivelled up, not thriving and taking up valuable space.  I'll be removing the useless one with an old saw and a shovel in a couple of months.

The frost took our Victorias... first time ever, but the Gages which flower earlier and usually suffer are doing great!

My Victoria died of drought last year, and hasn't been replaced yet. The Cambridge Gage is looking good.

We had in excess of 70lbs from 2 trees last year - this year I think we'll be lucky to get more than 5lb

AW Tinshed - the proud parent syndrome!

I'm like that with my one cherry!

Last year I also had one pear in the garden - it mysteriously dissappeared one day - I think my Stepdad half-inched it! :(

Well, it sounds like a few of you have had less fruit this year, but for me, I seem to be getting it in huge quantities... my damson is absolutely hanging heavy with little fruits and my victoria is totally full of green plums so am going to have a good crop.

Funny really because the Victoria is about 15 years old (planted on the plot long before I took over) and it has had a dying off problem on one side, so have sawn off the dead branches and painted the raw bits with ordinary house paint and it seems to have stopped the rot on one side and the other is where the abundance of fruit now is... a bit lopsided but looking good!

Last year when I thought it was on its last legs I bought a new Victoria from Aldi in the spring and planted it close by... that is doing well too, lots of growth but no plums yet, although hopefully in a year or so.

I have never had so many damsons though, will have to buy bucketloads of gin and vodka to make my delicious liqueur ... just finished the last of the damson gin from last year so need new supplies anyway  :)

Just the opposite of saddad - lots of plums and no gages??
