Title: Identification please?
Post by: Jenfur on June 20, 2007, 22:37:32
After clearing our allotment (well some of it) we found these growing. They look a bit like they should be there, but I don't know what they are. Can anyone tell me? And if they aren't weeds, what should I do with them? Leave them or move them?

Looks like Ruby(rhubarb?) Chard.

A spinach substitute I believe.

Cool must have been there a while as plot has been out of use for 8 years. I will search on the recipes for any uses of it. If I pick some will it regrow? the plants look pretty small.

You can pull a few leaves at a time and it will regrow. If it was planted this year or self-seeded you can carry on cropping but ultimately it will go to seed and then you can't eat it cos it gets bitter and coarse.

Swiss Chard seems to be one of nature's survivors - i pulled up a row last autumn when I moved stuff around, & the roots in the compost bin resprouted and the roots left lying on the ground put out new roots and started growing again sideways up.

How come anything I accidentaly damage isn't so keen to regrow  ???
