Title: more rhubarb advice please
Post by: Hot_Potato on June 20, 2007, 11:54:34
some of you may remember that at Eastertime I was given a plant (instead of an egg 8) as my present (just what I wanted)

I asked advice and it's planted near to my flat in a communal border in the gardens here where I live......it's absolutely flourished (thank you all) but am wondering whether I should be pulling any of it....it's grown huge, tall with lots and lots of thinnish sticks with lovely leaves and is rather spreading over other things in the border.

Would it be ok to pull some of the longest or fatest looking ones (& maybe even use them for my favourite chutney (courtesy of E.J.) seems to shame to chuck them :o

advice please - H.P.

Have a look at the thread on rhubarb in the basics section.

thanks quizzical1 (twas trying to bye-pass and get a quick answer - hadn't realised there was a rhubarb thread in basics)

knew of course that you shouldn't really pick or pull it the first year (this was a baby new plant) but just wondered

will take a chance I think and pull just a few :P

We took on a plot in Feb this year. The place was full of rhubarb and was growing where we did not want it to grow. We dug it all up but saved 1 newish shoot from the side of one of the big crowns. We re-planted it and like yours it has gone really well. We pulled all the outer leaves and have made a crumble with it last sunday.

It was delicious and no after effects, so I say go for it and pick your rhubarb.

Mossy.

thanks Mossy for that!.............still not picked the rhubarb in border yet but must!      went to lottie last evening for a couple of hours - brought home 2lbs. rhubarb from more established plant there (3rd year) so have plenty for chutney but a crumble would be nice altho I like it cooked with small amount of apple and plonked on my porridge :P or with greek yogurt (2% fat cos of healthy eating)

I've just been outside and pulled 6 lovely long slender stems (varying in diameter but all slenderish) 3 measure between 20 & 22" long from very end to start of leaf and the other 3 around 17/18" long

Had planned to add them to my chutney but when I cut them in half (to be able to get them in 'fridge') they were so juicy and crisp have decided to use them for 'puds/crumble' instead - will use the much bigger lot I picked from lottie last night to make the chutney

Should I now give the rest of border/new plant a good feed & with what please - tomato feed, Miracle Grow or Phostergen - what would you advise please? - feel I need to give it a boost after rudely disturbing this tender but vigorous plant.
