Title: New Neighbours
Post by: queenfishface on June 19, 2007, 22:16:23
I live by the canal and it's been very exciting over the past few weeks. I walk along the tow path every few days to the supermarket and have learnt to make sure I have my camera.

This was their first hour out on the water. I love their stumpy little wings. Unfortunately close up they have baldy heads and bulging eyes but they still got plenty of ahhh's from people walking by.
Not such a pleasant note:- there were three other chicks still clinging to a fallen branch being totally ignored by Mum and Dad. Apparently it really is survival of the fittest if you are a moorhen. :-[

Ahh they are sweet even with their baldy heads & bulging eyes.  Why do all ducks seem to be such rotten parents? A few years ago I was watching a family who started off with about 12 ducklings & one by one they all disappeared - not a single one survived.

Moorhens are horrid to their children!

They kill most of them by drowning them and attacking them.  Really sad but I think they generally only let one or two survive and ignore the others - not feeding them and then turning on them when they are weak and holding them under the water.

Nature Eh!

I hope your lot survive!
