Please tell me that such a things exists... I noticed that one of my groups of Shallots had keeled over, picked it up off the ground (it's roots gave no resistance) & found what looks like a white mycium in the attached soil. The roots attached to the base pretty much fell off when I put it under the tap (which I stupidly did before taking a piccie).
Bulbs are still firm, all the nearby garlic & Japanese Onions appears fine (lifted 2 days ago), and all the remaining Shallots seem fine.
I wonder if I should lift the rest of the Shallots now, even though it's a bit early... 3 more days of rain won't help things much.
So, is this that or is there a less evil rot that happens to be white?
Sounds horribly like it!!
Thanks Tim - it almost certainly must've come in on the shallots I bought from the allotment shop as the plot hadn't been used for a number of years... although it's possible it was there already. How miserable if it is.
Lift the rest and see what they're like. Don't grow alliums in that part of the plot.
So far I've only had one bad one in the Garlic bed.
