Hi Sarah,
Martin Mere is in Lancashire, not far from Southport.
It is part of the WWT.

We've been members for 2 years. Our 6 year old son is nature mad and birds are his favourite. Our other 2 children also enjoy going because some of the ducks and geese feed out of their hands.
It was our 1st time to see an owl in the wild. Someone else pointed them out to us. It was fantastic to them in their natural environment and not in a cage.
I think Autumnwatch is returning to Martin Mere again this year.

I saw a tawny owl at the weekend too! We were walking past a v posh big house, I looked into the grounds and there was owl, perched on top of the fence around the tennis court (v, v posh house). It was motionless, looking in the other direction.

We gazed at it for ages, transfixed, hoping it would turn it's head towards us. I dug out my mobile to take a couple of photos, we watched and waited. How excited we were.

Then slowly the realisation dawned... it was bloomin made of plastic!

There to scare the birdies off the tennis court.  ::)
