Title: I harvested something (VERY proud)
Post by: BarbaraGood on June 17, 2007, 17:14:50
I really never imagined this day would come, and was enviously looking at all of your potato photos thinking "when will mine even flower?"

Well I guess international kidney don't bother wasting their time on flowers ;)

Middle daughter and myself rummaged (deep!) around one and a half plants an hor ago and got these :):) I think I planted too deep tho, the plants themselves look pathetic and the potatoes are SO deep down!!

I am very pleased with them, and we were SO excited, I am glad nobody else was there to see us shrieking and jumping ;D shame dinner is already sorted for tonight really!!!

Here they are dirty, then clean

I harvested my spuds yesterday too (see my earlier post).

Mine were Pentland Javelin and they didn't flower either. They had loads of growth on top (they were grown in a container) and I wondered if all the growth had gone into the greenery and that there wouldn't have been anything underneath but I needn't have worried. I got 50 potatoes off the four that I planted.

I had some with my tea last night and they were lovely, all dripping in butter....mmmmmmmm.

Jo.

Well done you! No shop can produce the quality and the feeling you must have when you dig up your first produce of the year, still waiting for my first harvest. I too will be shrieking and jumping when the time comes and I won’t care who is looking.

Good stuff, I've also been harvesting today: first spuds (Rocket and Vales Emerald), petit pois Waverex, Blusta Khol Rabi and a cauliflower; just eaten cauliflower cheese with mushrooms and garlic, the peas and potatoes....heavenly, even the kids were impressed!! ;D

Thanks for all of your lovely comments, I have to admit I was still talking about them while lying in bed  :o I am sure my husband thinks I have taken leave of my senses  ;D
Its been POURING down all night which I am sure makes them harder to dig out (it was hard work yesterday!) but I need some more to make a meal for the 5 of us and a few baby ones for lunch for me so off I go this morning I think!

BarbaraGood - I know the feeling I lay in bed trying to figure out where my crops are going. I dug up one plant of I Kidney yesterday to see if they were ready alot whiter then the shop brought ones I thought. Brilliant feeling harvesting your own veg.

I know how you feel too  :)

This afternoon, I have harvested one of my containers and have lovely Maris Peer.  Mine didn't flower either and also had lots of greenery.

Two more containers to go over the next couple of weeks.
