Title: Composting tissues?
Post by: aquilegia on June 07, 2004, 16:28:21
I've often thought of composting used tissues, but have rejected it with the thought of superbugs breeding among the rotting vegetable matter, or at least, the germs not being killed.

But on GW on Friday, Rachel de Thane said she's going to compost hers.

Not being one who believes everything these TV people say, can you tell me if it's a good idea or not.

I hate throwing stuff away when it can be reused or recycled.

I put mine on the compost heap and also kitchen towels.  I don't know if this the right thing to do or not as I'm still on my first heap but I figured it's what I've got an immune system for.  It's also a handy way of disposing of all the tissues I use down the allotment now it's hayfever season.

I also put kitchen paper on the compost heap provided it hasn't been near cleaning chemicals or meat/fish but I draw the line at tissues ... can't provide you with any scientific reason - it a psychological thing!    :-\    AC

I'm dubious about tissues too - what do they add to the paper to give "wet strength" ?

If peeing on your compost heap is OK, then I can't imagine why composting tissues wouldn't be.

(OK, I guess the first would actually be less bacterially bad due to the cleansing effect of the kidneys...)

Tenus; The way you worded that...ie; 'If peeing on your compost heap is ok....' Gave me an instant picture of all the people at your lottie site balancing on their compo bin edge and doing it!....Possibly waving to each other over the fencing?... :o

It's an open site Ken and I don't think I could keep my balance on my rickety compost bin made of old tin doors!!
