Title: My very first potato harvest
Post by: jo9919 on June 16, 2007, 22:19:49
This is my very first year growing anything (except tomato's). I'm growing in containers outdoors and today I have pulled up my potatoes (Pentland Javelin).

I've got 50.....YES 50.....good sized potatoes from just four tubers. Some are quite small, but most of them are a great size.

I haven't tried them yet so I'm reserving judgement, but they look great.

I've also harvested my peas today. Again, grown in a container, but I've got enough for a few good helpings.

Jo.

Well done Jo, I know just how you feel, I turned out a container of Swift tonight & had loads - I find it so exciting  :) I made the whole family admire them - several times.  :)

Well done! It's a great moment, isn't it? I was so pleased to find this site and be able to take pics of a small group of spuds and have them admired, all my mates think I am just being even more eccentric than usual...here, I am among friends! lol

Brilliant - they will taste so much better as you grow these yourself. I'm starting to harvest our Duke of york we have them for dinner today. I love the feeling when you start digging them up they are like little treasures.

:) good for you Jo, the thrill of digging up your own spuds never fades, I cooked a few Swift, chopped a bit of apple mint, mixed it with butter, let it melt on the spuds in the pan and wolfed the lot :P

It's my yearly ritual, you don't feel like doing it with shop bought spuds, the taste just isn't there,

happy growing / shades x

Don't blame you being excited Jo, it's my first year of growing anything and I'm nearly bursting with excitment  ;D
My potatoes are in containers too, as I've limited space in my garden, but if I only get 1 or 2 I'll be thrilled!!
Picked my first pea pod today and think my neighbours thought I'd found hidden treasure burried in my garden, I was so excited!! I know I'm easy pleased but at least everyone here knows what it feels like and gets just as giddy as I do- like Katy my friends think I'm going loopy  :D

Mr Plasma, I always grow 1 raised bed with a very early spud, then the time comes that I need the bed and the spuds have to come out whatever size they are. We dig them all up,grade and bag them according to size,we pack them in bags that are 1 serving for the two os us,plus a few cold leftovers, the bags go in the fridge and we use them as we need them,we start with the smallest first and work our way up ,this takes about 3/4 weeks. By the time they are gone our second early bed is ready.I don't wash them and they scrape lovely right to the end.

Well........it seems that I was in good company yesterday. I wondered if I had pulled them up too soon with them not having flowered. It sounds like everyone was unearthing their own little treasures yesterday.

I had a few last night, they were lovely, all dripping in butter.....mmmmmmm.

I'm having more tonight for my tea (yes, I know it'a already 9.15pm. I work on a Sunday so our Sunday dinner is always VERY late). I'm having roast beef with my 'own grown' (doesn't that sound great) new potatoes, and my 'own grown' (sorry, got to say it again) peas.

Jo.

Still waiting for my first harvest on the lottie, have planted lots including spuds but nothing is quite ready to be harvested. However the wonderful lady on the plot next to mine handed me a fantastic dozen spuds when she was leaving this evening. We will be having them tomorrow smothered in butter some bacon and peas. What a great bunch of fellow plot holders, everyone helping each other out  this is what it is all about.

YAY  ;D

I went and dug a few pots today!

Left them in the basket outside this afternoon and the torrential rain has washed them clean. The skins were so tender, the rain's washed them off too.

Straight into the pan. X
