Title: Apples splitting
Post by: greatpalm on June 16, 2007, 09:54:56
Hi all

I purchased an apple tree in the spring and put it in a large pot.

The tree is growing great and has produced quite a lot of apples. The problem is that they have all started splitting.

I've watered regularly apart from during a wet spell we had in May.

I have another tree of the same variety in a smaller pot and none of these apples are splitting. In fact they are considerably larger than those splitting in the larger pot.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Steve

Is the variety 'Discovery', as this is prone to splitting.

No - the variety is Herefordshire Russet, which I gather is a new variety.

When you potted it up was it in flower or had the embryo fruit formed.

I am only guessing but the plant may have had a bit of a culture check, what is technically known as a 'physiological disorder' at this stage and caused your problem.

As I said I am only guessing and have formed this opinion based on the information at hand.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Thanks for the reply Tee Gee.

I did put it into a bigger pot, perhaps when it was in flower (sorry can't remember).

Hope it sorts itself out next year.
