This came up in a hello post.
Who would actually be interested in a Yorkshire A4A meet.(Not limited to just Yorkies)
I don't mind organising it but need interest and ideas for a spot.
I also don't mind someone else doing it.
Mentioned was Castle Howard.
I have done a bit of googling and found..............
Parcevall Hall in the Dales
Newby Hall
Duncombe Park
Wentworth Castle
Brodsworth Hall
Scampton Walled Gardens
Wassand Hall
RHS, Gardens Harlow Carr in Harrogate.
I know nothing about any of them...ideas ..needed..plus any others
XX Jeannine

Ta, I am pretty dumb with a computer XX Jeannine
Jeannine, you're not DUmb! - maybe still practising - and that's OK, we're all still learning at computers and gardening!! ;)
Kathi :D
I'd be interested depending on when and where of course. Harlow Carr is really nice but very big, has a fantastic little shop too. I've never been to Scampston walled garden but really want to go as I've heard it's really beautiful. Newby hall is also meant to be nice, but I've not heard much about the others.
SP x
Just for thinking about, my first thought was the RHS gardens at Harlow Carr.
I gave then a ring, group bookings are £5 regular £6, but RHS members and 1 guest per member get in free.
There is no problem having a picnic there, there isn't a place we can actually book, but there are lots of seats and grass areas that we can use.
There are a couple of choices for eating there if you prefer.
It is close to the town and railway station with a taxi rank outside.
It is a start.
Kathi, I have had a look at Scampston now too,it let me in finally, it looks very interesting.
XX Jeannine
Jeannine, the Scampston link seems slow, but should get there in the end!
Kathi
I suggested Harlow Carr on the other thread!
;D
I know, where do you think I got the name from XXX Thank you, looks good,Jeannine
Yes I would love to come if I can - thanks for sorting us out Jeannine
yes please :D :D
If it wasn't too far away and you don't mind people with purple hair I'd be up for it.
I should within 15 miles or so of the Skipton area (accomodation being available) for a couple of weeks from mid-July. Love to sample a Yorkshire sandwhich...even fish&chips.
Need a bit of notice if I'm to walk it from Colne, tho. (It's 6 hours on the canal)
I think a plot visit would be good. (yep I'm sad)
I'd be interested - kids could go to mums - could we make it a saturday or sunday or summer hols please? No OH to negotiate with now so would be great to meet up!
I think summer hols, date to be decided by the majority,I am still waiting for firm ideas as to when and where, I still fancy the RHS garden Harlow Carr, they seemed very friendly, but I am happy to look into all ideas.
So far it seems we have three put forward, Harlow Carr,Scampton Walled Gardens and Castle Howard
Other choices or votes for the above please.
XX Jeannine
I will sort out a list of interested folks for tomorrow.
wouldnt mind tagging along this time!................no babies on the way so i hope to be available as and when.
we live close to brodsworth hall.............am ashamed to say that ive never been there but it has had a lot of work done apparently.
ill go with the flow on this...............just let me know where and when!
OK, this is the list of names that have said a yes or exoressed a possible interest, it will sort itself out as we go along. Some are from the original post.
Caroline7758...you started the idea
grawrc
saddad
kenkew
prink13
sweet-pea
flossie
mc55
MickW
Olive Oil
marestail murderer
Carol
So we have something to think about now.
Where?
When?
Who?
XX Jeannine
I might be able to make it too, really depends on the date as my off duty is pretty much set in stone........ :-\
After 15th July as I am GCSE marking till then... anytime late July/August as we have family in Leeds (Adoptive) and York (real)..
;D
Here's my twopenneth!
Scampston is lovely, but only in the summer months as it's mainly perrennial, prairie style planting (designed by Piet Oudolf), unless it's changed since I was last there. It's also quite small.
Harlow Carr has plenty of space and is open all year round, always something new to see. The cafe has recently been taken over by Betty's of Harrogate, which means it's good but expensive and busy, so picnic might be best. It isn't actually that close to the station, but there are plenty of buses, or if you're energetic you can walk from Valley Gardens in Harrogate.Probably one of the easiest to get to if coming by public transport.
Newby Hall is nice, loads to see including a sculpture trail. Very popular with families, especially at weekends, which may be good or bad!
Just realised most of this is on the websites, but now you've got my spin!
Thanks Caroline, it seems we may have 3/4 for Harlow Carr. I wonder how far from the station, they say 1.5 miles in their site, I thought it sounded a bit odd a gardens so close to town, so maybe it is a misprint. They certainly sounded very nice. Anybody not hapy with Harlow Carr?? Yell out quick, I don't know any of them.
Picnic ideas... each bring our own...or do we do a Pot Luck and bring a prepared dish to share. We could have a sign up list, eg salad, dessert, entree, etc .
I don't know if it is differnt here, but back home we asked folks to sign up to bring 1 item, which was enough to feed the people coming with them plus 1/2 more, this made it work for different appetites and covered the situations that happen sometimes, like the day the lady bring a large dessert dropped it in the car park.
Anyway as always, majority will rule.
Ideas,dates XX Jeannine
I've just booked a flight back to UK. I'm there from 20 July to 4 Aug. If I can borrow one of the cars in the family or sort out public transport I'm open to any of the venues mentioned.
Ken
If the meet falls on one of my days off, then I'm game for Harlow Carr. If during the school holidays, there are usually some events organised for the children and there is a small play area and a model village. I, too, think a picnic is best and I like Jeannine's suggestion of 'bring a dish'.
My own allotment, on Harlow Hill, is not far from Harlow Carr, but I don't think I'll offer a guided tour! However, I could collect & return some people to the railway station if required - I could squeeze 4 passengers into my car. I'll check out the buses - I think the 106 which goes pass my plot goes fairly near but probably leaves a good half mile to walk. At least the bus has got you up the hill!
Ok so I will take it to the next step. those interested, please could you PM by way so I have you all together, would you please say
dates that are good/not good for you
shared picnic/not shared picnic
OK/notOK with Harlow Carr
This is not a commitment!!!
Please PM me even if you think I already know.
XX Jeannine
We're away 23rd-27th July but available most weekends (unless something else comes up,of course!) Harlow Carr is fine for us (though Paul prefers Newby Hall!) and we could always pick people up from the station too. Happy to do our own or a shared picnic.
BTW, Autoroute says it's 3.4 miles from the station.
:-\
Ahem...I live on the wrong side of the Pennines, but would love to come. Harlow Carr sounds great!
A picnic would be a great idea, anything to keep me away from Betty's cakes!
;)
We have family in Leeds, please, count me in!
We have got to this point.
Judging by PMs and comments here Harlow Carr seems to be the most popular
Those who have mentioned food seem to like the idea of a picnic. We can sort out that a little later.
For day, Saturday or Sunday seems to be the popular choice.
Dates, this is the one that is awkward. Most of you want late July/August
In order to get the majority choice I still need preferred dates from:
Sweetpea
Prink13
MickW

THERE IS STILL LOTS OF TIME FOR OTHERS TO JOIN US,OPEN TO ALL,
XX Jeannine
I have just done a bit of calender juggling and bearing in mind the dates I have been given so far it seems as if 2 weekends in Jully are best for the majority , they are 21st/22nd and 28th/29th.Many people areaway in August.
However when I break it down further, sadly MC 55 cannot make either weekend, and it looks like everyone else who has contacted me so far can make the 21st July.(some not the 22nd)
Here is the list of folks who cam make it for that date.

I am still waiting for a few to confirm but I think they are waiting for a date to check.
What do you all think?? Is Saturday 21st July OK!!
I can go to the next step of it is. XX Jeannine
sorry guys i dont think i can make this.
cambourne7
Jeannine, you'll have to count me out too, not sure of dates as unsure when going to see the Queen!!!!!
Kathi
Well Kathi that is the best excuse I have ever heard,,,,,name dropper LOL XX Jeannine
There's been a landslide on the A59 over Blubberhouses on that steep road that runs along the crag-side. I'm sure it will be OK by July, but I'm keeping in touch with my friends in Skipton on progress. The road was blocked at the last report.
Kathi, just had a thought, it is not only for Yorkshire folks, do you want to give her a ring and ask her if she is free that day.Oh, and remind her to bring food for the picnic. XX Jeannine
Green Salad anyone?
;D
Yes, KK, road was blocked when I came through on Tuesday from Kendal, but it's such a major road, I'm sure it'll be cleared pretty soon.
By eck`a meet oop North? Me and Lass be spending brass in July getting poncified. Shame really cos Jen worked at Harlow Carr
Oh wot a bluddy shame tha 'nows. I still want to know what Toms you want from me. XX Jeannine
let me know if the date changes :'( :'( , however its not all bad as I'll be enjoying myself in Sweden ;D ;D
Yes count me in wherever, whenever, will have a new car so no worries about breaking down now!
If anyone wants a lift coming my way then thats ok.
Oh, Stephan, what a shame- was going to email you offering to return your hospitality. Jenny kept that quiet- what did she do there?
If anyone needs a bed on the Saturday night they are welcome here. Marymary??
Ok, I think we look like we have a date, SATURDAY 21ST JULY,HARLOW CARR.
I will get on to them in the next couple of days.
Not tomrrow cos I am running a Pet Show and I don't know if they are available Sundays.
Admission is free to members of RHS and they can bring 1 guest a piece without paying for them.
Some of you have told me if you would like to do a pot luck picnic but not enough of you to say it for sure so maybe we should be thinking of that next.
What about 10.30 meeting time, is that too soon or too late?
We do all have to meet outside in order to get a group rate and go in together.
Things to think about. Have I forgotten anything.
XX Jeannine
I DO NOT BELIEVE IT......
Today, at 2pm OH bought 2 tickets to go and see Bryan Adams at Murrayfield Stadium. on 21st July 2007
I prefer to be in Yorkshire so will have to work on him and try to sell them tickets.
Anyone interested in 2 tickets to go see Bryan Adams in Edinburgh???
I shall PM when I manage it Jeannine.
;) ;) ;)
I have HDRA membership will that get me in free? I'll be coming on my own obviously LOL... and am happy to bring a plate of food or several LOL
Someone pick me up in Skipton and I'll bring some fresh made juicy pork pies.
Oh bummer! I'm actually working that day, but I could join you from about 2pm - too late for lunch, but not too late to meet you all, I hope.
Kenkew - if you can't get a lift, there is a bus from Skipton to Harrogate. It's the X59 and the first one leaves Skipton at 9.00, arriving Harrogate at 10.25. They return every two hours, with the last leaving at 17.30 (Apologies if you already know this).
Thanks, L'pad. I didn't know that. It's got to leave from the bus station and there's only one so there's no prob's there.
I'll try and check route via internet but I have a feeling it's going to 'go round the houses' poss Otley and even Guisley etc....any idea how close I can get to venue on that bus?
Kenkew - the journey shouldn't be too bad - Skipton, Bolton Bridge, Kettlesing Head, Penny Pot & Harrogate - taking 55 mins. From Harrogate, you can catch the 106 which takes you quite close to Harlow Carr AND, if you ask the driver nicely, he'll give you a voucher for a discounted entrance fee to the gardens!
See http://www.harrogateanddistrict.co.uk for further info.
sorry jeannine just seen this no unfrtunately can't make either weekend :(
never mind, I'll get more organised next time ;D
Hi Jeannine,
Sorry I'd completely forgotten about this thread! I think I can make the 21st but will have to check. I am an RHS member so can possibly get someone in for free (Flossie, if you're coming up and not a member then I could repay the lift you gave me to Barnsdale :-)
Sp x
I am still working on this but it is on the back burner for a couple of days, they were not answering their phone yesterday. XX Jeannine
Apparently they're suffering flood damage. I can't find any details, but it might explain why they weren't answering the phone.
Yes I think so, they were closed 2 weeks ago after the first lot of flooding.
I think it best to just leave this for a while, if they have been badly flooded a visit so soon after might not be the best plan.
I suggest we just sit on it for a bit rather than book ahead, then come back to the idea when all this flooding stuff is past.
I don't know how badly they have been affected but if even remotely like me they are in trouble and seeing damaged plants is not at the top of my list.
Let me know what you all think PLEASE.
Perhaps we could go somewhere else or do Harlow later in the year.
XX Jeannine
It gets quite boggy at Harlow Carr whenever it rains, so no wonder they are flooded this week! No trains out of Harrogate today, apparently. Should dry out by late July, hopefully!
Can we come too? Only just read this thread, we've been bailing out and saying good bye to our crops! >:(
But do we let it get us down (well briefly yes!) NO! :)
Of course you can, I will add you to the list XX Jeannine
I hope this is all clear before the day!
Extract from Local rag;
On the roads anxious residents called the police to report flooding at Kexgill on the A59, which has recently reopened after a landslide, and also rising water in fields near the River Wharfe at Grassington.
This is the road Skipton-Harrogate.
KK, you remind me of the Scottish chap in Dad's Army- "We're all doomed!" ;D
Dads's army...the butcher answers. Don't panic, don't panic XX Jeannine
I'm still game, I'll have to check date with OH but fairly certain it is clear...
Dress code for the day? Scuba gear or outboard motors?
;D
Maybe August then... Im available!
I don't even know what is happening here now, our school has been completely trashed by the floods and it may be we are all working through the summer holidays to get it back on track,we got in today, everything is ruined and has to be replaced, so until I know what I am doing I am having to put a hold on doing anything with the meet. If anyone wants to take over that is OK , right now we don't know which end is up here. XX Jeannine
Jeannine, think you've done most of what needs doing already, but I'd be happy to coordinate as i'm not far from Harlow Carr. If anyone wants any info, drop me a PM.
Caroline thank you, I will pm you the list of people and their available dates and the contact names I have at Harlow ,please count me in of course ,hopefully I wll be able to make it, but if not at least I know ot won't be spoiling things for anyone else. XX Jeannine
Well done, J (xx) you started the ball rolling and the support, or at least the potential support is there. If the eliments defeat or other wise make it a no-go, at least we know these sort of outings/meetings are a real possibility for the future. Many thanks for the organising....there will be other dates and venues and meetings, I'm sure of that.
Good on you.
Ken(Look-out...triple one coming up...don't click! xxx)
...and on the A59...
"Traffic was diverted through Otley and Ilkley while the road was closed. It was eventually reopened on Sunday night.
Unfortunately there will be further disruption next month when part of the road is resurfaced. This is not connected to the landslide."
As Jeannine has done all the work, I think we should wait until she can come along.
Mick that is very sweet, but I would rather you didn't, if we are in school all through the holidays trying to get it ready for Sepember I don't know when I will get a free day, I will join you if I can but I may not know till the last minute so don't plan round me. XX Jeannine
so..............is the meet still on?
i could do with a day out with good company after the last few weeks.....lol
and just found out from the rota that my new job leaves me free most weekends...........yaaahooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!
cant face up to the clean up of the plot just yet..........a day spent with enthusiasts will maybe kick start my determination
Yep, still on as far as I'm concerned, assume we're looking at 21st July still as the most popular time. Only thing is if this rain carries on for much longer it might be very wet underfoot at Harlow Carr so i'll give them a ring next week (or maybe even pop over) and see what it's like. Think quite a lot of us are RHS members so will need to see if there are enough non-members to get a group rate. Will have a look back through the thread on Friday (my day off) and check who's still coming.
OK, later than promised, but I'm back! I rang HC today & they siad the gardens have recovered from the floods and all paths except one are back in use.
Can we have a roll-call of who is still hoping to come on Saturday 21st July, and please say whether you are an RHS member. If so, you can get in free, otherwise it's $6 (sorry, got an australian keyboard, that's 6 pounds) or $5 if there are at least 10 non-members. Don't know what anyone else thinks, but it doesn't seem fair to make RHS members pay to get the group rate for everyone else!PM me if you prefer. We can still offer at least one bed, and lifts from Harrogate station if required. Think we suggested 10.30 start but it's flexible.
Still need to speak to OH who is in Stafford at the moment...
::)
I'm on, but would have to join you late as I'm working on the 21st (which also means I can't offer the lifts from the station that I'd hoped).
I'm no longer a member of RHS, having joined HC before it was taken over by RHS. Much better in those days because as long as you were inside before the gates closed, you could stay as long as you liked, letting yourself out though a side gate. As there is a childrens' playground, this was great on summer evenings for our young daughter. We had many a picnic there! (Sorry, I've digressed)
I've posted earlier that if you catch the bus, you can claim a voucher from the driver, giving a discount on the entrance fee. I can't remember exactly what it is, but can check if anyone's interested.
Lillypad
Really sorry that I cannot make it. Hope that you all have a good day.
.
:( sorry guy's I can't make it either...going on hols on the 22nd.so I'll be busy getting ready for that , soz.......... :(
we're not coming up to york until 23rd so will be to late for it ;D
Just bumping this up again- is anybody coming??
I hope to, I'm an RHS member too. ;D
That's 3 of us, then! (plus partners?)
Ha! If it was a tool shop he might be interested........... :-\
Sorry didn't see Jeannine's post inbetween, I was referring to the ? partners coming too post!
OOPs, think that was my fault for asking Dan to make this topic sticky- forgot Jeannine's first post would appear at the top of every page! I'll start a new thread if people get confused, but I'm away overnight so I'll see where we're up to tomorrow night.
Me and Al can make it... we aren't RHS but we are HDRA and I think that has some sort of discount..
::)
ohhhhhhhhhhhhh!
yep....................ill be there!.
me , mrs marestail and baby marestail will all be in attendance.............not rhs members but dont mind paying our way.........lol.
will have to leave early afternoon...about 4 ish..............got a works do on!
traveling up a1 from donny.............thru weatherby................and got 3 spare......possibly 4.............seats available................if anyone needs a lift!
harlow carr is on the weatherby /skipton road isnt it?
should be there for a 10.30 kick off!
see you all there!
ps................are we arranging a time and place to all meet up?
hate to be wandering around wondering.....is that a "a4a`er"?
My Dad died on Monday so I won't be able to make it, sorry.
oh, Mick, sorry to hear about your dad.. :(
Yes, really sorry to hear about your dad, Mick. Thanks for taking the time to let us know. Hope we can meet up in the future.
Lots of photo opportunities, Deb! BTW, if anyone's wondering whether the A59 is open, I think it's closed overnight this week, 7pm to 6 am so shouldn't be a problem. (Read the signs while driving along the road today, but think that's what it said!)
And MM, yes, it's well signposted as you get near to Harrogate. If you come through Wetherby, the signs take you a long way round, but it's probably worth it on a Saturday to avoid Harrogate town centre. Maps on the website:
http://www.rhs.org.uk/WhatsOn/Gardens/harlowcarr/harlowcarrreach.htm (http://www.rhs.org.uk/WhatsOn/Gardens/harlowcarr/harlowcarrreach.htm)
I'm really sorry but I can't make it now. My daughter has just bought their first house and I'm helping with the move and sorting out the overgrown back yard.
I hope you all have a wonderful time and make it an annual event.
Mick - very sorry to hear about your Dad
Domestic problems means I won't be able to make that particular day either but if you have to rearrange I have the rest of July and Most of August to play with!!
Sorry.
David
hey mick...........sorry to hear about your dad mate..................hope to meet you in the near future!
caroline........did you get to do a roll call?
im bringing wifes nanna and grandad too.............so add them to any list!
see those who can make it on saturday!
Only this one, MM. I'm going to start a new thread as very few people have confirmed that they can come. Wondering whether it's worth it for those people coming a long way. :(
Well, I almost made it. Got to England with just a few minor hic-cups. Got to Yorkshire OK. Arranged a lift for Sunday to be there for 08.30 but I was stuck for a lift back to Skipton for early afternoon to see one of my G'children attend the local Gala as Village Queen, so had to miss out. It chucked it down Saturday night so I don't suppose it would have been the best of days. Ah! Well. Maybe some other time.
Actually, kenkew, since we had planned it for the Saturday, you wouldn't have met any of us anyway! ;D
Bu*ger....and I changed my watch to UK time too.
