Might be the ants, if they have removed large amounts of soil from around the roots, so that the roots aren't getting any water.

I'm having the same problem, this time with spuds, just dug out a few small rows and must have uncovered about 10 nests.  Ant eggs everywhere, I hope the birds get them!!

Be horrid to them - put in one of those Ant Station poison traps. Stops them in their tracks. (We've had a lot of them this year, too.)

They do seem worse this year - I reckon it's the warm winter!

we have a nest in the greenhouse floor.  Will they do damage to any crops in there, as all my growbags are on staging etc - nothing on floor level.  I was going to leave them be, but now not sure?

just found this in my book of words: for ants small bottle of clove oil in large can of water, haven't tried it myself but may be worth a go.

Armillatox is a deadly contact poison for ants, and sprayed into the nest under pressure will usually kill off most of the colony.  I have to do this every year because the paving outside my back door is completely undermined with nests, and the b*ggers keep invading my kitchen.
