Title: Whales
Post by: Trixiebelle on June 13, 2007, 17:32:09
Whales ..

I found this article a bit sad

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070612/ap_on_re_us/century_old_whale_6;_ylt=Au.ps4NLRCXEjPWlOc_L2duEgXwV

This bit particularly:

"The 49-foot male whale died when it was shot with a similar projectile last month, and the older device was found buried beneath its blubber as hunters carved it with a chain saw for harvesting"

It is indeed. You can understand them hunting whales back then, but not now.

In this particular case it's ancient tradition (which was perfectly sustainable using pre-industrial methods), plus modern technology, plus greed. The problems began when we started producing large numbers of genuinely ocean-worthy ships, and escalated from there.
