Title: Can I eat??
Post by: Rosyred on June 13, 2007, 16:09:29
I've picked a couple of small cauliflowers as they are going to seed but one has purple bits on it. Could this purple of come from the chicken pellets I used and is it ok to eat? Some of the pellets got caught on the curb as I couldn't get to the base of the cauliflowers. Hope I get a response quickly as I want it for my tea.

Thanks :)

Caulis get a purple tinge to them when under stress, often if they are too small they get this shade on them,it is OK. I can't answer about the pelletts but the purple is common XX Jeannine

I would say they are edible-what they taste like is to be found out

Rosy, I would boil rather than steam them, they may have a strong flavour.

No the pellets were brown but wasn't sure if they made it go purple.

Well we have had dinner and the cauliflower was nice, no strong favour just right. We managed to have all home grown veg with our pork, new potatoes, cauli & greyhound cabbage. Was very nice x  :)

The purple bits could be partial throwback from a purple variety that might have been used in the breeding of this particular variety.
