Title: Leeks with my brassicas
Post by: silly billy on June 13, 2007, 15:56:20
I'm using a 3 bed rotation but due to shortage of space i have nowhere for my leeks so i'm thinking of planting them between my cabbages and brussel sprouts which will go in this weekend either between the rows or between each plant. Is it worth doing as a 1 off?

Can't you wait until your early potatoes are lifted and plant them there?

According to my list leeks and brassicas go well together - although seeing this for the first time has surprised me.

It would work but I think to plant them together would not help the leeks.

In particular with the sprouts that have a fairly large root system, plus they generally grow much higher so would restrict the light to the leeks, thus affecting photosynthis thus affecting size & quality.

Silly Billy - your avatar got me worried.  Last year on one of the hottest days of the year a thunderbug got inside my monitor (large sized expensive flattie). It wandered around for a bit, then disappeared.  The next day it appeared on the RH side of the screen, had a bit of a fit -- and died.  So now I have a permanent hyphen whenever I type word documents or emails.  I thought your avatar was another one.   Perhaps it's getting late and I should go to bed.  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

What about rotation?

sb,
Not a good plan I would suggest for the above.
Digging the leeks, I would have thought would disturb the sprout roots to a detrimental degree?
