Hi, i have noticed that some of my tadpoles this year are much larger than i have seen before. they have almost inch long tails and big heads that are a more adult frog/toad colour. normally my tadpoles are small and black and get legs without getting huge like this. i still have some normal looking black ones too. does anyone know what this big ones could be.
Alit :)
They may be newts. If they are then they will eat the frog taddy's They have really bully heads. Have a browse on the net and you will see the newt s life cycle
Do you have frog and toad tadpoles in your pond?
Frogs spawn earlier than toads and therefore the tadpoles are bigger. They are brown in colour whereas toad tadpoles are black. I thought newt tadpoles were relatively small and tended to be long and thin rather than just a head and tail.
hmm, all of my tadpoles are a brown speckled ... can't believe they are all newts, as I didn't have any to begin with and the pond has been overrun with frogs. Some of them are just starting to grow legs
