Title: Rappa Senza Turnip Greens
Post by: isbister on June 11, 2007, 10:03:37
Anybody grown these? I'm thinking of following our first earlies with a row. Are they prone to flea beetle?

I grew some Cima di Rapa sprouting turnip greens this year and yes, they were definitely prone to flea beetle. Mind you, we are infested with the little beasts, and they get everything that is vaguely brassica related - from cabbages to mizuna - as well as stuff like rocket.
So far I have not found a totally effective way of dealing with the problem. Derris dust is only partially successful; the best way I have discovered so far is to cover the crop with fleece - which, frankly, is a bit of a bother in my book. If anyone has any better suggestions I would love to hear them.

Thanks Valentine you've saved me a job there - I don't think I'll bother with the turnip greens then as we're infested with flea beetle as well - they've stripped  our radishes, kohl rabbi and rocket. I havn't got a solution other than fleece either. They seem to be leaving our cavolo nero alone - but that's got whitefly, at least you can keep that down by hosing.
