Title: Pumpkin panic!
Post by: carolinej on June 10, 2007, 07:13:10
My Alantic Giant pumpkin plant is growing really well now. I have had 4 baby pumpkins on it, but they have all gone yellow and then dropped off :o

What am I doing wrong?

Could they be not fertilised properly?  Like courgettes do at the beginning of the season?  I hope someone can come along with a more authoratative answer for you....

Hope you get some more anyway, it is early days yet, plenty of time for new little baby pumpkins... :)

Pumpkins are big feeders and drinkers need watering each day the way I grow them is:

Pumpkin growing info organic.
Dig a trench 1 1/2 to 2 spade in depth the deeper the better,
Fill with, newspapers, cardboard even woolen jumpers at base (this will have the effect to hold moisture in the soil) top with kitchen waste, garden compost leaves and manure, anything which will decay and create heat in the soil when rotten down, Top with about 4-6 inches of soil let settle water if needed to speed the process up. Plant the young plants (after risk of frost has passed)  3 ft apart and water in well.
You can use a large pop bottle cut the bottom off and bury it top down in the soil to half way and fill up so it will water the plant slowly.
You could always just dig a hole one per plant 2 ft wide by the same depth.
Put mats of cardboard or straw under the fruits to keep them clean and off the soil when growing.Good luck with your pumpkins.
hope this helps ?

It's just fertilisation Caroline, don't worry,it happens when the plant is small, you will be fine. XX Jeannine

Sometimes they need a helping hand if there are few pollinators about! see here; http://tinyurl.com/2fcra6
