Post by: Jackie on June 05, 2004, 20:02:16
Hi, as my username suggests I am called Jackie, I am a 30 year old mother of 2 (boy aged 12 and girl aged 5) and I am awaiting my contract for my first ever allotment :). I have had confermation that I will be offered the one of my choice, its just upto the postman to deliver the contract now. I have only ever grown my own runner beans before so I am really hopeing you lot are a nice friendly bunch (I have been reading and you all seem lovely ;D ) and that you will be able to give me some advice like what a complete novice should try to grow!!
My other half thinks I am completely mad and I AM going to proove him wrong (but I might not tell him if you are kind enough to help  ;) )
My daughter has already got he little wheelbarrow and her spade ready and she seems just as excited as I am.
I do hope you will all be able to help me (shame you cant all come and help get rid of the shoulder height weeds  :( )
Jackie

Hi,

I hope you enjoy your allotment.  On my plot there are quite a few mums with children and it is a pleasure to watch them in the summer tending and watering their plot.  During school holidays the mums often get together and come for the day bringing a picnic with them.  I will never forget my sons delight at coming across his first raspberry cane not to mention the joy he got from picking peas - we never managed to get enough to take home as he always ate them straight from the pod.

brilliant, kids are of an age to help, not bury themselves in the soil as my now 4 yr old used to do.
Your NGOH (non gardening other half) sounds like mine - who helps very very sporadically for about 2 hours and only if it is a knocking down brick wall type job.  Funnily enough he's gone a bit quite now the lottie is groaning with rapidly growing veg - especially when taunted with 'The Little Red Hen' story. he he
My lottie was waist high in weeds last Aug when I got it - I hoed the lot, covered most with dpm (thick black plastic stuff) then uncovered and dug it bit by bit - that way the weeds didn't die off completely, but didn't grow back until I could deal with them.  Very best of luck

Hiya Jackie, welcome and congratulations on your new plot!  No looking back now, you will become an addict with aching joints and muddy fingernails, but it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo worth it!  Big buzz when Ava (my gardens occassionally other half) and the kids dug the first of the new pots last week, and they are already pinching the strawbs and eating them straight from the plants, before I even get a look in!  Little and often seems to be the best way to go about things, and be patient with the sprogs....you can quite easily loose an hour watching ants going about their business or hunting for frogs or making a snail farm!  ;D
