hi veggiewomble, with all my spanners, and garden tools i use a green scouring pad with oil on it to remove any dirt/rust, rub well untill all durt/rust has gone, wipe off any mess, then place a few drop of oil on to the metal and wipe lightly with a cloth, leaveing a coating of oil on the surface,
hope this helps

After you finish using them, spray on wd-40 and leave them like that (dont wipe it off). The wd40 displaces the moisture, so protecting the tool.
