Title: Organic Slug Control
Post by: cambourne7 on June 06, 2007, 15:31:47
Hi Guys,

When we were at barnsdale we were told about this new organic slug pellet using 'Ferramol'

This is the first "organic" slug pellet on the market. Based on the active ingredient Iron Phosphate it is completely harmless to other animals - from earthworms to beetles, hedgehogs or dogs and cats. It is not poisonous to fish or birs and does not require any waiting period. This is what we all were waiting for: the ultimate remedy in the "eternal" fight of gardeners against slugs! The bait is rainproof - it actually requires moisture to expand and become more attractive to slugs. If not eaten, the pellets will be broken down by soil bacteria and turned ito naturally occuring Iron and Phosphate. Apply 5g/sqm well scattered over the total area which requires protection.

Can be used in conjunction with NEMASLUG: the nematodes work in the soil where they attack small slugs, which move in the top layer of the soil. Big slugs move on the surface and will be attracted to the slug pellets.

This can be obtained by

Growing Success Organic Lts
Wessex House
1-2 Hilltop Business Park
Devizes Rd
Salisbury

I picked some up at 'Downtown' near barnsdale and used it on a bed of newly planted cabbages and there is not one hole in any after a week.

I have also found this online

Thanks for that info Cambourne7, I'd noticed the signs they had up too and had intended looking into it but not quite gotten around to it.  Good to hear it is working for you, I shall have to get some myself.

 ;D

Been using it since last year, it's ok,  but nothing beats sneaking up on the b******s and despatching them personally!

So, what is the 'active ingredient'? It should say on the packet.

As Cambourne7 said at the beginning - Iron Phosphate.

The RHS site states - 'A new form of pelleted bait containing ferric phosphate (Growing Success Advanced Slug Killer) is also relatively non-toxic to vertebrate animals.'

What does 'relatively non-toxic' mean then?

Less toxic than the normal ones?! Not very clear is it!

By the way, my local Wilkinson's sell this brand of pellets cheaper than anywhere else I've seen, which of course I was AFTER I had purchased some at a silly garden centre price!

I also use them plus nematodes and slug pubs and plant guards (plastic bottles).....they can come and have go if they think they're hard enough!! (and they do!)

Look for 'Ferramol' on the pack its a TM image.

I think its a race on my plot as to who gets the slugs and snails first me or the toad thats living in my compost bin.

I've been using them since last year (I don't think they were approved as organic at the start but they were clearly less bad). This year, I have to say I haven't found them to be all that effective and am sad to say I'll be returning to the older kind.

i have the perfect organic way to control slugs. all it takes is a bit of time and effort. basically, wait until it is dark and has stopped raining and go down the plot and kill them. i chop them in half with scissors. went down the other week and caught 104, yes 104. so thats 104 less

As I've said before one damp June evening I got over 450... stopped counting! They were spread over 5 plots... very thinly spread come to think of it... after they got the order of the boot!
