Hi all
Some Hellebore seeds somehow found their way into my pocket at Barnsdale on Saturday ::) So I was wondering whether anyone could tell me when best to sow them, should I start them off indoors etc...
Many thanks

Sow now in ordinart seed compost, just covering the seeds. Leave exposed to the weather and they will either germinate straight away or do nothing until spring.
I did offer seeds to people on here, but apologies all round, there are very very few flowers which have developed seed this year for some reason.
Thanks Palustris. Think the ones I have are just the bog standard orientalis. Shall sow them this weekend snd leave them to be, fingers crossed some of them will eventually germinate :)

These need planting while fresh. I had a very successful sowing last year, which all came up during the spring.
Why bother sowing seed? Just dig up the seedlings from underneath the plant.
Must take my trowel and a trug next time I go to Barnsdale :D
Do you gather the seed while the pod is green or wait until it is black?
Sorry if this is a stupid question! ::)

Do not wait too long, the pod will split and the seeds spill. I tend to squeeze the pods as they begin to go brown and if the seeds are black then collect them and sow fresh.
Hi
I got some hellebore seed in the T & M sale, the instructions say sow immediately, cover with compost, leave in a warm place for 1 month, if no germination place in the fridge for 1 month, and then repeat until germination!
good luck! so far no sign of mine after two weeks in warm.

The simpleast thing is to leave it outside over the winter.
Mine just sow themselves under the plants as Eristic has said. You may get some mixed colours if you have more than one sort.
