I started eating my last butternut squash from last years crop last night. Amazed as to how long it has kept for, it was just starting to go a bit soft at the top but otherwise still in perfect condition.
Has anyone else still got squashes left to eat from last year?
SP x
I still have one Jaspee de Vendee to cut, it's a little on the soft side but will roast nicely. ooo more seeds to offer perhaps !!
From the Freezer, yes plus French beans, broad beans, courgettes and fruit of all sorts.
Yes, I still have french beans tomatoes and courgettes in the freezer too, desperately trying to work my way through them now before this years crop is ready!
Used up my last butternut last week :'( :'(
Have one spaghetti squash left, and that is only because we really are not that keen on them! :)
no squash, :( but still got a 2lb bag of frozen raspberries,as well as leeks, runners, apple, pears, plums and gooseberries, oh, and 2 sweetcorn left ;D
Still got a couple of Crown Prince to use...
;D
We have a huge musquade de provence sitting on top of the fridge waiting until I have the energy to try and cut into it...
Yes, I am still eating mine,I have about 8 Sugar Loaf Delicata left, this is mt favourite, and always outlasts all the others, they are very sweet but with no damage at all XX Jeannine
Due to my bumper first crop last year, I finished eating mine by about christmas!! Needless to say, I am going to grow loads more this year, as I dont like shop bought ones since tasting home grown ones.
cj :)
This is what I have left now after dinner
Oh wow! What ones are they Jeannine?
cj :)
They are Sugar Loaf Delicata, when picked and first cured they are a creamy white colour with geen stripes, they turn this colour over a long time in storage these have been 9 months off the vine. After they cure wash the skins in a very mild bleach water, and the same afer each two months or so,this is to kill any mildew spores that may have been on the plants.
I think I sent you some of these.
Oh and Caroline I got 3 Batman pumpkins to germinate,so I will pot one on a ndsend it to you.

Well done! I just dont know what I did wrong with them. Thank you, you are an angel. I am really looking forward to seeing the end product. Do you think they will be as black on top as the picture showed?

I will check tomorrow if they are still alive. I have lost loads of plants over the lottie. I dont understand it, as some are looking really green and healthy, and some have shrivelled up. They are spread over 2 lotties, so there doesnt seem to be a common theme of where they are planted.
Am I cross.....OF COURSE I AM NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:(
I think I will keep the batman one you send me at home in the garden where I can keep an eye on it.
I know I have one really healthy 'Jack be Little' and just one of my atlantic giants is doing well.
cj :)
I have four Festival left in perfect condition. they have been stored in the cool back bedroom, no sun. I may keep one to just see how much longer it will store. My First Taste and Red Kuri, I had to eat them months ago, as they were starting to go soft.
I must try Sugar Loaf next year, and see how it does in Glasgow.
5 crown prince still waiting to be used.
I've got 6 and a half butternuts left ... going soft rapidly though.

Half? ???
cj :)
I've still got 3 Winter Festival in the garage, they have been brilliant so I am growing them again this year along with Buttercup. :)
Jeannine - what's the recipe for your bleach wash?
Wow!! love your sugarloaves J! we've got one waltham butternut left, but are now eating fresh patty pans ;D
Bleach wash: I use 2 tablepoons (30 ml) to a gallon of water.Oh and don't take of the handle, they keep much longer with it on. XX Jeannine
thanks Jeannine. Made the mistake last year of storing them near the apples in the garage. One bad apple eh? This year, God willing on the crop, we'll store them in the vestibule, and have them as a conversation piece
Some where I have an article in a book which gives the average storage dates for most squash, it is useful as some start to go much faster than others and you can use them first. I find the Spaghetti family are the first to go. I will try to find it, but I haven't looked at it for years so be patientXX Jeannine
I suppose a simple guide to storage is how hard they are to cut cut open. You're right about the spag squash going first. They did. Delicious the lot of them
Which type of bleach do you use, peroxide or hypochlorite?
Domestos
One of the peroxide bleaches would be better for the environment; Domestos is hypochlorite, which releases chlorine. Hypochlorite releases oxygen, and breaks down to nothing more than oxygen and water.
I was thinking of using sterliizer for wine equipment - sodium metabisulphite
You are probably right, but I use so little of this type of thing I have not bothered too much. I mix it, wipe the squash down and chuck the rest down the drain, then I do it a second time. I think the bottle of Domestos I have is 3 years old and was the smallest one I could find. XX Jeannine
