Title: Sweetcorn Spacing
Post by: tim on June 05, 2007, 16:59:53
"Do not grow other varieties nearby."  (Cross pollination)  So what's nearby??

And does anyone grow much closer than 18" & still get as many cobs?

With varieties that may cross pollinate near by means 25 feet!!!

I realised at the weekend that our plot neighbour has a block of sweetcorn on his plot, and the other side of us next door but one does too!  Blinking typical, but we'll still give it a go & see what happens  ;D

Thanks, Jeannine.

And what about the cob rate?

2 per plant is my personal preference. More  than that I think  the cob size suffers or some are improperly pollinated. There is only 1 Dad and he is at the top, he can't hang on for ever to pollinate any latecomers. Less than 2 and I feel robbed.

Number is determined by variety as a general rule. As a rough guide below are a few.

I love Seneca Horizon but only 1 cob.
Mystique 1
Seneca Snowshoe 2.
Sugar Dots 2/3
Sugar Buns 2
Sweet Tooth(a favourite) 2/3

According to most books - 18".

Do you lose significantly by going closer?
