Title: my very first spuds
Post by: norfolklass on June 04, 2007, 14:32:08
first harvest of Rocket, with and without soil.
boiled and served with a bit of butter and freshly ground black pepper with chicken salad last night: deeeeeelishus!!!

(edit: taken from two plants. tried not to feel smug when neighbour told me he'd had to dig up four plants to get a decent meal for one. beginner's luck and now I'll probably get blight ::))

Well done Norfoklass.

This is my first year growing Rocket, I know it is subject to soil variations etc, but I thought mine tasted a bit bland.

How long do you cook your for?  I have so far managed to over and under cook them ::)

If you have over -cooking problems, do them from cold - & for a little longer than when a knife slides in easily.

And DO FREEZE a few bags when they're at their best for luxury later on.

all 1st earlies planted on 1st April, and 2nd earlies planted a week or two later.
had 14 weeks marked on the calendar but as they've started flowering I thought I'd dig up a plant and see how they were doing. they did taste nice, surprisingly sweet, but I did over-cook them a bit ::)

still got Arran Pilot, Pentland Javelin and Duke of York to try â€" went for a few seed potatoes of lots of varieties, to see which grow and taste best for next year.
it's all very exciting ;D
