I have planted some summer psb at a spacing of 45cm, harvest in the autumn. I have some early psb, but no room. Could I get away with planting the epsb between the spsb as it will not be ready to harvest until feb next year?
Sue
The PSB may have re stricted light and both grow quite big. Can you not put your PSB along a border? I'm having the same prob got loads to go in after my first early potatoes.
I too am waiting for my early pots. to be cropped to plant out my psb, though I am a little worried that the earth may not be firm enough as recommended in all the advice. Has anyone done this before and had success?
Thanks Rosyred, the border may be the answer, as we have just started at the lottie, the edging is a bit higgle-de-piggly, we had no clear edge to work to, so just kind o' made it up as we went. We are supposed to have 2ft paths between the plots, so I might get the tape out to see if I can gain a few extra inches here and there!!! ::)
All our earlies are in our 1x2m patch at home as we didnt get the lottie until mid April. I am not sure what will be planted in there, but with 14 courgette plants, 20 squash, 28 early psb, 10 cauli fighting for the space, and alos I forgot to plan in the swedes, I am not sure what will win in the battle! I do have room for about 6 psb or 10 cauli and 4 courgettes at the lottie. But thats it. I am thinking about planting something in the furrows between the late potato ridges, but whtever I plant there will get in the way when the spuds are dug up :(
We heard that the brassicas didnt like soft, worked soil, so we decided to dig holes and plant them in the last undug section of the lottie. It was fully weedkillered in April with Glyph, so I am hoping that we will be able to keep on top of the weeds as they appear.
I wouldn't put PSB closer than three feet.
Wow, really that far apart.
Okay, maybe I will have lots of plants to give away!
As its our first year it is really hard to judge the number of plants that we will need to feed the 5 of us (and the odd offering to parents and friends).
I think Iwill try to fit in 3 of the earlies then and a few cauli, maybe swash teh swede in the edging. And maybe plant some squash in the veg bed, and pass on teh rest :( I am seriously thinking about planting in the front lawn!!
have you got any big pots or buckets, courgettes will do ok in them, have you got a compost heap, squash like it in there :)
at least it'll be another couple of plants planted ;D
Thanks Manicscousers, I have 14 courgettes in 8 amd 10 inch pots. The squash tricked me, they wouldn't germinate! So I kept planting one more of each type, still no germination after another week so planted another! Leaving the ungerminated ones lying around in the garden - on the table, under the bench etc. We went away for the week and came back to over 20 germinated plants!!
I dont have a compost heap. When you say big pots, how big do you mean?
Sue
the famous black buckets would be ok, you probably wouldn't get as much as in open ground but, if they're a climber, you could train them up, then it's just water and feed..
isn't it just the way..we had the same with bsil and parsley, none came up, thought the seed was old, bought some new, everything came up, 40 parsley and 40 basil plants !!
in case you don't know yet, the buckets come free from supermarkets and co-ops or 99p for 10 from morrisons :)

Interesting that Robert!
When I grew it I kept it to around 15"-18" apart in a block and I found it was self supporting.
This was a necessity as we can get some foul weather up here on top of the Pennines.
I still found I got a good crop!
I think I have already given reasons in the past as to why I gave up growing it, i.e. I didn't think I got the return I would hope for for a veg that occupies ground for so long.
I changed my cropping plan to still ensure I get 'fresh veg' all the year round.

Thanks Tee gee.
Thats what I am hoping by planting early psb and summer psb, the summer is from june-oct, and then the early from feb-may.
PSB can get rather large if you plant it in good soil and keep the feathered locusts off, that's why I won't plant it close.
With my soil there's not too much danger then!
And I expect to lose a few plants early on to the slugs!
I planted mine out two days ago and the slugs haven't noticed that it's there yet!
