I am planting mine out today after a couple of weeks hardening off and greenhouse at night.
They are looking MUCH bigger and stronger already, altho a few have died off.
My plot neighbour has made what looks like a windbreak about 1.5m sq for his with stakes and really thick netting, but not covered the corn?
Is this the done thing? I have some stuff to make a windbreak with, so I not need to protect the corn from the birds?
Many thanks
EDITED DUE TO APPALLING TYPING!!!
never mind gtg now anyway, will take my chances :-\
Personally I have never had the pigeons eat my corn, they get all the brassicas if they can. It might be that the grassy foliage is a bit hard compared to the soft growth of a brassica seedling. The slugs will have a go at them though.
No-one ever covers it here.
Others may have different advice though.
I just planted mine out yesterday up here in Glasgow, 3 early varieties....

Nice looking potato ridging?
I've put out about twenty out in the last three days, never covered last year, bloody squirrels got my last ten or so last year, >:( will be watching the barstards this year. ;D ;D ;D
Thanks all :)
Luckily the site was quite busy and it was 50:50 as to whether to protect. I think I shall leave them for now as I have made the windbreak or sorts, until they are a bit more established, altho my neighbouring plotholders were admiring how well they have come on at home - I was SO proud 8) they are old timers, 3 men on each side of me running a plot the size of mine, so I got lots of encouragement and advice :)
Been back tonight to water them in and plot out for my peas/beans, sow some more carrots and peas and its looking more like an allotment now finally!! Also got masses of cardboard as my brother is fitting some kitchens at the moment so got loads of the weed covered!
Fingers crossed! Its worse than having babies!!!
I have grown sweet corn for several years in Glasgow. Put my first lot out yesterday, but I do give them wind protection for the first month or so. Cold, strong east winds can trash them. Luckily, the squirrels have not learnt to eat my sweetcorn.
Thanks real food, I think altho its very sheltered there, you are right, the plot is only about half a mile from the seafront and the north sea winds!
I planted out 30 sweetcorn plants today, had OH sitting cutting pop bottles in half to make plastic shields which I put around the bottom of each plant.
This deters the slimies plus gives them a bit of protection, and I keep them on all season as it makes giving them a drink really easy if they need one.
Mine all out this weekend, Minipop and Applause, mulched up with straw, but no other protection. (they seemed to do ok last year)
put mine out last week don't know what's happened to them all gone, is it too late to start again.....
if it was me, dawn, i'd stick some in the ground, they should germinate quickly now..you never know ;D
yer think i'll take the chance thanks for the reply
I've lost sweetcorn in their entirety to deer.
I have moved house and deer are still an issue.
i plant mine out in blocks and build a little wall of soil up around the outer edge making a sorta pond which i fill every couple of days. Have never failed to produce almost 7' tall plants and good sized cobs.Hope to learn how to add photo's on here to show>

I use a three sisters bed with craters instead of humps, I plant the squash in the crater walls and the beans and corn in the crater bottom. Great when water is short.
Hopefully we will get ours out this week ... Ovation, Minipop and some Aztec Black and Bloody Butcher...
;D
Do the leaves turn a bit yellowey, once planted ???
Planted mine out last week (incredible f1).
They've gone into sunny border in garden, only 9, planted in a block.
Dwarf french beans planted in between.
Approx how many will I get from 4 cobs?
Debs :P
Mine went a bit yellow for first few days after planting out, but perked up ok after a water. Hope yours do too xx
Mine have gone yellow before I planted them out.
They are quite big though, in small pots.
I must get round to planting them this weekend.
Debs I am not sure about your question but if you work on about 2 cobs to a plant, about a 1-1/2 cups corn per cob. Does that help
Dawn you can plant direct still, if you have crinkled corn it is a supersweet and it needs a bit more heat to germinate than the others, ground temp should be 24C for direct sowing. For Hybrid sweets and sugar enhanced types 18C will do it. If you have fungicide treated seeds..16C for Supersweets,13C for all others.

I read that watering is the key whilst they get established. I also made a windbreak to give them some protection as the plot is quite exposed. I lost a few of my plants to the wind whilst hardening off and couldn't afford to lose anymore once they were in the ground.
This picture was taken just after they went in. They've really strenghtend up now. It's my first season on the allotment and loving every minute!

looking good, buzz..what's the 66 for ?..just being nosey :)
Oh, that's my plot number. I didn't want my neighbours half-inching my newly acquired pallets ;D
Mind them pallets don't blow over Buzz or you'll end up with squash instead of sweetcorn. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
