Title: Bay tree suckers
Post by: allanwoolley on May 31, 2007, 13:31:18
My bay tree is throwing up suckers by the score and I seem to be unable to keep them cut away as they just grow back with a vengance.   Not wishing to use a weedkiller has anyone any ideas for control.

Try rubbing them off rather than cutting.  Cutting activates the "I'm hurt must grow" mechanism ( I know there's a technical term for this but I'm well into blond mode today).  If you rub them off it seems to mostly go unnoticed & you don't get so much re-growth.

Cheers

Thanks for that.   Sounds like it's worth a try.   At least that will encourage me to deal with the problem earlier rather than leave the shoots to get a hold.

You can always propagate from the suckers... Bay Trees are expensive... OH does a good side line !
Thought you were going to be talking about the leaf suckers but that would be in Pests!
