Title: My very small plot.
Post by: Tiercel on May 28, 2007, 16:57:43
I used to have two allotments. Then the council decided to build some houses on the land. To compensate the holders they enlarged another allotment site. But I lost out on the draw and could only get a small plot so I gave it up.
That was 4 years ago since then I have been doing my back garden as a growing plot. It is not ideal for growing as it faces east, is shaded by trees most of the morning and by the house in the afternoon. Still I can get something out of it. The biggest problem was the slope and the fact that it was all infill with clay and boulders. I am getting there, if somewhat slowly ::)

The first plan was to build 4 retaining walls like in this picture.

That went out the window when I found out the cost of the stone.
So I decided on wooden terraces.

Just started making a new bed. You cannot make an omelet without breaking a few eggs ;)

That looks like a lot of hard work, but you're making some great beds there!

Very impressed - you are doing really well and doing it the sensible way a bit at a time and planting as you go What are you doing for the soil?

By the way, if you want to know where to get the strips of plastic sheeting? They make great cloches.  UPVC window firms throw them in the skip, if the firms are anything like ours you can get them for asking. They are offcuts from consevetry roofs, they come in various shapes and sizes.

Unfortunately I have to  get the soil where and when I can. I keep an eye on the freecycle movement I have had some from there. I also had a load from a friend that was extending a hardstanding but that was very sandy but it has grown some good carrots and parsnips.

Never seen one built in step form, but I'm liking what I see, how do you get on when it pours down on the lower steps.  ;D ;D ;D
