Title: How many in a growbag?
Post by: gerbera on May 25, 2007, 10:52:51
I've bought some growbags for the first time this year and plan to use them in my (new-to-me ;)) greenhouse.

The question is how many plants per growbag would you advise?

They are standard size growbags, and I'm hoping to use them for cucumbers (crystal lemon, & another I can't remember) and melons, (minnesota midget, watermelon sugarbaby, imperial canteloupe). The bag seems to suggest that you can plant several per bag....but I'm sceptical.......to be honest I think they would only be suitable for 1 a piece! ::)

Any suggestions? ???

I'm quite fond of Crystal Lemon as a small cucumber variety and think that you could get 2 plants/bag. As for the melons... they can grow massive, so I'd either put one in each bag or fill the bags to bursting with more loam/compost. The best way is probably to use any old tubs to plant in. I've also used stacks of fresh turf, turned upside-down.  :)

Turn the growbag on its end, bang all the compost to the bottom, then cut of the polythene a few inches above the compost, and put one plant in each. That's the only way you will have enough compost per plant, or you will be needing to water them very frequently, especially in GH temperatures.

IMHO it's better to use large pots or "freeby flower buckets" filled with your own mix of compost.

The suppliers usually say 3 to a bag.

But I reckon no more than 2 (cucumbers or tomatoes) &, if you have room, do the Ina thing - half a bag on end per plant. This way, you can space them better, & add compost if you wish. Easier to water too.

Thanks for all the advice.  :-*

I have decided to tip them on end and, for the melons,  cut at the top, then fill to the brim with homemade-dung-rich-compost....and for the cucs, do the same, except cut them in half to make 2 bags.

The bonus is that they will take up less ground space......still trying to figure out how to get all the plants in my 6x8 greenhouse when they are fully grown ???.....I think the tomatoes are likely to get evicted!!!! ;)

That all sounds spot on!  ;)
