Title: How touching!
Post by: tim on June 02, 2004, 06:15:52
Thought this was rather nice - Tim

Thigmomorphogenesis
Plants have a more compact and sturdy growth pattern (called habit) when subjected to mechanical stimuli such as wind, rain (rain drops have weight) and the occasional touch by passersby.
The one on the left was touched twice a day.

Shorter, stockier, stronger.

I am sure I read something about that back at the start of the year and I have been brushing my hands gently over all of my seedlings, whilst chatting with them....I know....I know.... and my plants do seem stronger, they really do!  ;D

I talk to, and stroke my plants too EJ! You are not alone, think I read somewhere that Prince Charles does too! ;D  Course it is just further confirmation for the family that I am totally losing the plot! ::)

Fingle, remember all the problems people had with leggy tomato seedlings? Shorter is better.

You all may have a prince who talks to plants, we have a princess who talks to trees hah!

That's really quite impressive, Tim.  Food for thought eh?
Hmm I'm on the short side, (would I say sturdy/stocky?) was I stroked and patted as a child?  :-\

Fingle, I've removed my 'smuggism' - maybe you would care to remove your 'generalisation'? = Tim

Later - second thoughts - maybe you would like a full apology? OK - I over-reacted to what I took to be a 'smart' answer.
So sad, though, after all this time, that that is the impression I give.

For Tim  :-*  :-* You don't come across to me as smug at all.

As I have often been heard to say, (by my family) we have to be careful how we type something as people can't see our faces, and often interpret differently. I am sure we are ALL guilty of typing things that don't somehow come out right on screen! ( this could be misconstrued for example!) But it is usually said without malice, just the wrong sounding words!

Yes, apologies from my end too...i was over-sensitive (bad day in the office) I didnt know you could remove posts. Have now removed mine and will no doubt continue to remove the mess i create with my hot-headedness.

I clearly need a scrumpy in my shed this weekend !!
