Hi all,
I have been given some jerusalem artichokes by my plot neighbour, and planted them about a monnth ago. So far nothing has happened, whilst everyone else's are romping away (all came from the same bloke, planted within a week of each other). Should I give up on them, dig them out and use the space for something else? I could do with a little area for some donated brussel sprouts....
:)
Have a firkle at one end and see what you can find... are yours just in a shadier spot?
:o
Slugs love the young shoots. Are they being eaten?

What is a firkle ?
JA's ......... I planted 12 about 3 weeks ago. Two are going mad, expect to see a bloke called Jack climbing them in the next week or so ;D
The other 10, no sign above ground (as yet).
Expert Lottie neighbour tells me they can be erratic by several weeks
a rummage or delve around, pushing the soil about to find the plant root / tuber...
Probably a northern dialect word... but as you were in the Danelaw as well I would have expected you to have heard it Mikey!
;D
Had a bit of a rummage, and nothing but the original tubers with little white shoots (about an inch long), but pointing in all random directions. They are not in any shade, full sun in fact. Planted them there specifically to create a bit of shade for one of my beds! Couldn't be slugs, as nothing had reached the surface as yet... Hohum, I guess there will be plenty on offer from my lottie neighbours once theirs crop!
:)
Sally I planted some really healthy tubers ages ago and I have no signs yet either XX Jeannine
Don't mean to brag, but mine are about 4ft high! I got the tubers from freecycle and planted them ages ago (maybe Feb/March?)
This is my first year ( Gardning ) so I don't know much but I planted some 6-8 weeks agp ( were in the south ) none of them done anything but I am learning to be patient and because of that some of them are popping up.

Just be patient, they'll be up soone enough. The recent spell of cold weather has sent them to sleep but they will grow.
There are a few about 18" tall inlittle potsfeeling very silly for the open day...
::)
I planted mine ages ago and only two have come up so far - but they are in a shady spot so might take a bit longer than usual. So I am sure yours are just a bit slow.
To add insult to injury I have a rogue coming up near the compost bins which is almost as tall as me!!
Jitterbug
We've never grown JAs before this year. Got them from Marshall's, slung them into the plot in early April, and now they're trees. :o People keep coming by and tsking that they'll take over the lot! Yes, they are triffids... ;D Then again, our garlic is pathetic this year. It's always something...
I have a acouple that are just peeping through now XX Jeannine
I have 2 in a potato pot, 3-4ft tall, but they are looking a bit sad at the moment, the lower leaves are going yellow.
I planted some more at the back of the garden against the garage wall, didnt really know what to do with them, as bought to eat, but they shrivelled and started sprouting, so past eating, but thought I could bung them in the ground or the composter! So planted them!
Have just dug out the 4th set of sprouted bits from the old site!!!
Hopefully that's got rid of them!
:-X
I had mine in a temp pot out of the frost.
I have moved them to a bigger final planting site last week when the growth were maybe a foot high.
Cheched today and they were maybe another couple of inches more growth on them.
Still dwarfed by the weeds :(
Not for long!!!!!!!
;D
