Title: Red beetle
Post by: Palustris on May 22, 2007, 18:50:32
Wondered if this was the dreaded Lily beetle, but it did not behave like they are reputed to and we have never seen any signs of damage on our lilies. Lovely colour though.

It is Pyrochroa serraticornis, a Cardinal beetle, not the dreaded one, phew.

Before you answered your own question, palustris, I was going to say that it didn't look like a lily beetle, but didn't know what it was.

Could you answer my question, please.  Is it a good beetle?  (Should I ever find one!)

To quote English Nature 'Predatory on other insects. Adults take flying insects from flowers and leaves, the larvae feed on larvae of other decaying wood-feeding insects living under the bark of broadleaved trees. ' so all in all a goody!
