Title: Spinach - pick or shave?
Post by: ninnyscrops on May 21, 2007, 20:34:27
I've got perp spinach growing and always pick - a fellow plotholder takes his shears to them about two inches above the ground - he says it stops them bolting. Looked at his today after he had "shaved them" as he calls it about two weeks ago and they are all back up!  Am I an Olive Oil novice and he's a Blueto brute? :-D

I always pick too & try & leave smaller leaves so thast each plant has some left.  Maybe I've been doing it all wrong cos it does eventually bolt.

Go for the shears it will all bolt eventually, pick out the best leaves and compost the rest!

Thanks for that Saddad   :) - I've never heard of "shaving" spinach, it sounds good, will try it when the plants are grown a bit more.

Contrarywise, with Chard, I always pick - as with a leaf salad - or the growing points are lost.
