Title: I'm a proud owner of a greenhouse
Post by: Rosyred on May 21, 2007, 14:34:46
We had a given to us and it now ready on the allotment to start filling. I'm going to use for cucumbers, melons, aubergines etc for them to stay and fruit there but i'm a bit concerned if it gets really hot as I will not be able to go there everyday to open the door. I can leave the window open and the door ajar does that sound ok?

Isn't a lovely feeling to have a greenhouse.
I have used that shading paint and now have netting up , to keep the temp down, as well as opening windows. I never leave the door open when i leave the lottie to go home.

Yep ! I,m so happy for you too. I,ve had mine for a year now and it is brilliant....although still learning. I need to get those automatic vent thingys to open the windows..it was so sunny yesterday morning I dashed up there to open up before it turned into an oven...and promptly fell down the steps coming back and broke my arm.   :'(     I have started off the veg seeds in there but mainly it is for my collection of cacti and epiphyllums . Would you like a cutting ?    Rohaise    :)
Tin Shed --I have to be careful of the door swinging open in the wind, the handle could go right through the glass if I,m not careful. have put a small seat between the two to catch it .

Rosyred, congratulations from me, there will be no holding you now. BTW have had great germination with the Atlantic Giant seeds you sent me.

Rohaise. Oh crikey, what bad luck, especially at this time of the year. Hope you can still manage some of the "gardening" jobs.
Lorna.

When I was working one of the retired gents on the site would open up the doors in the morning and I would call in after work and close up and water as necessary.

This was not inconvenient as I passed my allotment enroute home.

Have a word with some of the other allotmenteers or call in the morning enroute to work and again on the way home.

Word of warning try and get a bit of stiff wire netting or net nailed to a frame to put in the door opening to keep cats out..........they just love sitting in the sunshine in a greenhouse.

Thanks Tee Gee for that as we do have a couple of cats that walk around the allotment. I was hoping if I get friendly with the person whos back garden runs onto the allotment they could open up for me and close it especially when we go away.

I am tempted to get some sort of netting to go over the door so I can leave it open during the day - i wolud hate to find a fox in there. I pass the allotment gates as I walk up to work, so have begun to drop in before and arter work if I have time.

There are foxes on our site too.

Glad the pumpkins are going well Lorna they grew for everyone else but me. I think i'm over watering as my melons i've had a couple die and my cucumber plant. Oh well it was going swimmingly but now i'm losing stuff. Going to plant up the greenhouse on Monday with my melons, cucumber! and gerkins what haven't been eaten.
