Title: Pre and Post Strimming
Post by: oelph on May 20, 2007, 14:49:53
Been hard work today. We made a beginners mistake of not covering up the part of our plot we weren't cultivating and were suddenly confronted with knee high grass and weeds. Luckily I bought a strimmer for £40 and today we strimmed it all down. It needs a second going over and then we plan to cover up with black plastic or old carpet.

that looks good, you have made quite a difference.  you site looks nice, whereabouts are you? it looks pretty high, does it get windy there?

I had a similar idea today.  I thought that clearing it would be easier if I was dealling with short grass rather than the knee high stuff.  So, rather than go and start digging I went over to my parents' home to borrow a sickle.

After getting roped into various odd jobs I finally got away and got to the allotment around 12ish.  As I went through the gates something looked odd.  Got nearer the plot and it definatly wasn't as I'd left it.  Yep, while I was faffing about wasting half a day getting the sickle the bloke from the council had been round in his tractor drawn mower and chopped the whole thing down.

...which would have been nice if he'd not driven it over my already dug beds and then taken all my tarps away (later I found them stuffed behind the hedge at the back of the allotments)  :-\

Thanks :)

The site is in Plymouth (full of hills but nice views) and it can get quite windy. Luckily today was pretty calm so the cuttings weren't blowing over everyone elses plots.

Sid, I'm surprised they did that. Doesn't seem like the guy realised it was an owned plot. Hopefully you can make the best out of it though! Learn from us and cover up anything you aren't going to plant right away.

looks much better now oelph. I had two very overgrown beds and strimming really makes things more manageable, it also stops any weed seeds from spreading if there are weeds amongst that grass.

I have knee high grass areas... having five plots we still have a couple of corners to dig back...
