Hi I'm new here and found this site through the selfsufficientish website.
I have no idea about gardening but I want to start to learn and plan my allotment the best way possible.
I have bought a house on 1.5 acres and am working elsewhere while I pay it off. I plan to fly back and forth every 4 months or so to make changes and build the ground work for when I finally return. I need some help on whats the best way to lay out an allotment so that I can combine gardening and livestock to the best advantage.
I am also going to put in a dam and fill it with native freshwater fish.
The property is in Victoria Australia.
Thanks in advance
I've have limited experience with livestock... late 60's and ea 70's and none at all with Australia.... I found planning a 300sq yds allotment required at least four versions on the ground !
;D
If you don't already have a copy of this book by John Seymour (http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Complete-Self-sufficiency-Realists-Dreamers/dp/0751364428/ref=sr_1_2/026-6773328-5046041?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179695994&sr=1-2) then see if you can get a copy, not sure how relevant it will be for Australia but I'm sure a lot of it will be very useful information. Good luck with it all, sounds very exciting :)
Thanks I'll go see if I can find a copy of that book at least its a step in the right direction. plenty of time to read while I plan the allotment.
cheers
Hi
Sounds very exciting your new life in Australia!
It would very much depend on the area you are going to as to how you would plan your veggie growing. If you are in a tropical bit then out comes the lemon orange and avocado trees but some usual English stuff wouldn't survive!
I bought the original John Seymour book and have just bought a copy of the updated one. Although it is pretty much geared to the English terrain!
Good luck - sounds like fun and much hard work!
