Two top tips:
1) take pics before you start work
2) open a bottle of bubbly to celebrate

My top tip would be 'don't panic'  ;)  I remember being totally overwhelmed when we went to ours for the first time to actually make a start but once you get going it does seem achievable, honest  ;D

Oh, and do take lots of pix to share with us all, we just love before & after photos!

Good luck  ;)

Big day tomorrow… excellent news... Just take it one step at a time, make a rough sketch on how you would like the plot to look in the future. Clear a small area and put in some think you really like… enjoy. Good luck DD

Congrats - top tip? Remember that it's supposed to be fun and there's no law that says it has to look like the Garden of Eden in a couple of weeks (regardless of what the 'old boys' tell you  ;D)

Well done, enjoy and yes as others have told you, don't think it has to be pristine by June.  Pictures of course, we made our priority putting in stuff we had to wait a year or more for, this paid off, but we did have a bit we could put other stuff in as well  and we got our first one towards the autumn so it was easier.

Have fun XX Jeannine

welcome just the right time to get some runner beans in. it is a good fast crop and will give you a sense of achievement (and something to harvest) while you tackle more difficult crops above all enjoy it

;D Thank you everyone! I'll be taking the digital camera down there this morning and will put some photos on here for you all to see! It just so happens that my mum's got some spare runner bean seedlings that I can have so I guess I'll have to go find some canes from somewhere!

Right pen and paper in hand and I'm ready... Ooh I'd better get out of my pyjamas first!!

Well on my trip down to the allotment, I came across a really friendly chap who is the allotment officer. He told me that the plot I was given isn't the best and pointed out a better, healthier plot that's just been repossessed from the previous tennant.

I agreed with the guy that it's a much better site, and am now hoping that the council lady agrees that I can have it... I hope there's no problems as I'm looking forward to my first bank holiday digging!

Fingers crossed... I really hate our committee when they try to palm a poor plot off onto a keen newcomer... some would need a weeks work by a team of 20 just to shift the accumulated debris! I took one on that had a covering of Brambles and self set damsons some up to twenty years old!
:-X

Hello there Emily. Enjoy your allotment. Don't let it become a drudge. Do a section at a time and stand back and admire it. If you start off with small beds at first you will find it easier to rotate your crops and when you get established and run out of room ( we all do) you can then start to dig your paths and extend your beds. Don't forget the pics will you.
